Cannot download and cache Google Maps

Yes to most of your questions.
GPS will work technically, but it won't have any map data to use.

Thank you.

So then, the N7 GPS is basically useless on the road. I do understand there are certain apps/maps you can download via a subscription, but I wouldn't use it enough to justify the cost. For GPS to work on the road, you need a data plan which is not available on the N7.

Kevin, I cleared the Maps cache (ie. Maps menu (via the three dots at top RH corner) > Settings > Offline and cache > Clear all map tiles). If there is another cache for the system, I would be interested to know about it as it might come in handy in the future.

Tabletnovice, Like you i am a newbie with this stuff and there are far more experienced people out there than me but I don't think the maps POIs such as gas stations will show on downloaded maps. That said, the map of Calais (Northern France) that I downloaded certainly showed a few hotels, albeit, not the actual one that I was interested in! I did a quick test before posting this and went to an area that I used to live in just outside of London and got told Google Maps to indicate pubs but, when I asked for the map offline, the pubs were not on it. As I say, I am a newbie and others will know more and might contradict me.

Finally, perhaps I should put any problems with taking screenshots down to my sausage fingers pressing buttons in the wrong place rather than blaming the Nexus or Android!!

I still wish I could sort out the renaming issue and any more advice would obviously be much appreciated.

Thanks for the help thus far.

No, what you mean to say is that the google navigation and to a lesser extent maps apps are useless without a data connection. The gps works perfectly fine. I would recommend you check out an app called navfree usa. It is free as are the maps that power it and it works great for offline navigation.

I took a look and it says: "This app is incompatible with your Asus Nexus 7." Get this message quite a bit.

I'm pretty sure that you can plan ahead and get your route before you leave your data connection. That'll give you the route plus some additional in case you need to reroute (I think, haven't actually tested it).

There is an additional cache. If you go to Settings > Apps> Maps you'll see it listed there. It's separate from the in-app cache. I just cleared the cache from within the app and then went into settings and saw 1.24mb being used by Maps for cache.

@tabletnovice
It's too bad you have this issue because it is definitely compatible with the nexus 7. I would be contacting google support about why you are experiencing this.

@Kevin O'Quinn
The Google Navigation app will work offline as long as you do not deviate from your route. It cannot handle rerouting with no data connection.

I guess they can't make the Android navigation apps too good. Who would pay $200 for a GPS navigation unit if a $200 tablet can do all of that and more.
