Cannot get Note 8 to use USB OTG microphone w/headset to make calls

I work from home and want to use a Plantronics USB mic headset with an OTG adapter to make calls. The mic works but instead of the sound coming through the headset it comes through the phone speaker. I have tried toggled the speaker button but that doesnt work either

The hardware setup works 100% with the Voice Recorder App and power amp. Just not with the Phone App. It seems as there is something that just blocks the setup from being used with telephone calls.

A headset isn't an OTG device - take out the adapter.
