Cannot open MP4 links in forums

I run a small Pro Boards forum and a lot of users including myself are having issues opening / playing either embedded or direct links to MP4 and other video files on the net. For example if you look at this thread I can play the video fine on my Windows laptop but it just as a broken white square if I try and play it on my Android phone. (Forum wont let me post the link)

Here is the actual video link. It wont play on my phone either so I dont think its an issue with the forum. EDIT: it wont let me post this link either ,says its spam.

However if I email that link to myself and tell Android to open it in VLC player rather than Chrome it works fine on my phone.

Anyone got any ideas? I have users that have the same problem on other devices such as Kindles.

Have you tried using a different browser besides Chrome?

Embedded Video MP4 clips not playing on Android

I tried to post this earlier today but it seems to have disappeared.

I run a small forum and lately members are having issues playing various embedded or even externally linked video clips such as MP4 files. You just get a window where the video should be and a broken white square in the middle.

Seems to have got much worse in the last two weeks

Any ideas?

I have a similar question. A friend sent me and .mp4 file attached to an email. I could not find a way to play it on my Lenovo Tab M10 (HD) / Smart Tab M10 HD Tablet. When I tried to play it, it said something about a video error? I downloaded VLC Media Player for Android and it wouldn't play there either. I have used VLC on many Windows PCs over the years and it has saved me a few times because it *always* plays things that nothing else would play.

That being said, I was able to play the .mp4 file in question on my iPhone 6s with no problems. I was also able to play it on my laptop with the Windows Media Player, and the VLC Media Player. So there seems to be no problem with the .mp4 file itself. It just won't play on my tablet. I read somewhere that .mp4 files don't play (or don't play well) on Android. But that place said to use VLC, which as I said, I tried and it didn't work.

This seems like it should be a no-brainer. Any thoughts that might help me figure this out?

Non-standard MP4 file. Perhaps the frame rate or any other variable is not supported in the tablet

Do you know how the mp4 was created? Was it recorded using a phone's camera app, or is it something like a movie file ripped from a DVD?

Did you use the Save or Download option for the attachment first in the email app, then try to play it?
