Cannot sign I to Google play services

[Android Central Question]

I have a new Huawei y9 and as you know it doesn't come with Google. I have some apps that don't work without Google play services. I downloaded it and the sign in icon is there but nothing happens when I press it. I have tried clearing cache and data and that hasn't helped.

BTW, the Y9 was released in 2019, so it's unlikely to be "new." It might be new to you, but chances are it's used or refurbished. (I can't imagine that a store might still be selling a 3 year old phone that was never opened, unless Huawei had a lot​ of unsold stock.)
