Cannot use Chrome; strange warning message displays

I use Malwarebytes on my PC and like it; didn't know there's a smartphone version until PJRed mentioned it. I'll try it today. Thanks.

It's called Samsung Internet and is very good IMO. I switched to it though I have Firefox on everything else. I personally won't use Chrome on anything.

Hadn't heard of it. Will give it a try if I can find where to download (perhaps Google Playstore?). Thanks!

Where can I find Samsung Internet (perhaps in the Playstore)? My Samsung folder has these 4 apps: email, My Files, Samsung Milk Music (what is that?) and S voice.

I'm pretty sure the problem has to do with Chrome. I installed and ran Malwarebytes (in addition to running AGG and Avast) and none of them found anything. I then again cleared the cache in Chrome (All Time) and the xyz URL is still pasted into the search bar area at the top of Chrome.

Thanks.

I would avoid DFNDR and just use bitdefender.

The top two anti-malware apps on Android now are bitdefender and Norton.

Does this happen in Safe Mode as well? If it's adware, Safe Mode should block it from working. If it's a browser popup ad related to a website, I believe it will still occur even in Safe Mode. https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-28008

Haven't tried that yet. Will give it a try if the message reappears.

I also have been wondering something else about Chrome and Google which are currently Disabled. When I tapped on "Disable" they offered an option to reset to factory settings (or something similar). Would there be any reason to *not* try that? I don't have anything saved in either of them as I rarely use them on my phone.

Thank you.

Thanks.

Disabling a preinstalled app will uninstall all updates (which is what they mean by reverting it to the factory version) before disabling. There's no lasting harm in disabling an app. Sometimes, other apps might not work correctly if they depend on that disabled app, but then it's a simple matter of re-enabling it.

Hello everybody! I just created this account to respond to this post and I just want to say two things. Number one, what you are/were experiencing, Laurie, was most definitely a form of malware. That would be some sort of adware that somebody had packaged in an app that you had installed, and those sites that were popping up were generating revenue (i.e. like an ad clicker) for whomever developed the app. It really didn't have anything to do with the browser itself. Most of your Android antivirus apps are BS anyways. The thing is, the Android O.S. runs in a sandbox so it's relatively safe from the more harmful forms of malware. Unfortunately, every once in a while, you get these annoying forms of malware and an antivirus would have a hard time discerning that kind of malware and an authentic app doing what it would normally do and reaching out to the internet for one reason or another. All that is needed to fix an issue like that is to find the app that is causing the issue. I would start by uninstalling any app that you don't remember installing, or any app that looks suspect, one at a time, and then waiting to see if the problem disappears. If it does, then you found your problem app. But the main reason I wanted to create this account and post this, and I'm honestly pretty shocked and a bit appalled that nobody else said anything, you should NEVER post anything with your IP address on a public forum. Never ever, NEVER EVER!!!! Even if it was just your mobile devices IP, you wouldn't want to, but you were actually connected to [somebody's] WiFi there. And now that IP has been posted for over 7 months. It should have been brought to somebody's attention right way and either A) Censored, or B) Taken down. I'm not trying to come off as a ****, but that is a MASSIVE security hazard. But other than that, I do like what you guys do here, and am a fan of the community, so KEEP IT UP! CIAO!

Thanks for all the useful info. Concerning the IP address, I think it has been removed now. I tried to delete the message in question; it is still there by it looks like the graphic no longer includes an IP address. Can you let me know if it looks this way to you too? Thanks.
