Can't answer calls - screen remains dark

I have a Galaxy A32 running Android 12. When I receive a call the phone rings with my selected ring tone but the screen remains dark. Touching the screen or the side button doesn't cause the screen to turn on.

I have enabled "press volume up" to answer calls and this does work but even when doing so the screen remains dark until the call ends.

How do I fix this?

Go to settings>battery and device care>diagnostics and try running a test on the proximity sensor... you can also try safe mode to see if it persists there
