Can't download anything larger than a few MB with new 16 GB SD card (SOLVED, DISREGARD.)

I recently purchased a Memory/SD Card with 16GB of free space that is compatible with my phone, yet when I go to download a few pictures or an app, my phone still says there's insufficient space on the device. Not familiar with smartphones, having just gotten my first one in December. Would really like to figure this out and not have wasted $15. I would move pictures over to the SD card instead, but I have no clue how to do that, and my phone only came with 1.8 GB in the first place.
