Oftentimes, my phone rings while I using my phone, but the incoming call screen does not open automatically (to the screen with the red and green icons), and I can't figure out how to answer those calls. However, I have the YouMail spam protection app running to filter my calls, so perhaps this is the cause. Thanks.

Try uninstalling the spam filter and see if that fixes it

it happened to me a few times and i do not have YouMail installed. the phone rang, but nothing was showing on the screen for me to answer the call.

Any other 3rd party apps that might affect calls, like TrueCaller?
well, i do have a 3rd party phone app, but no trueCaller.

FYI...i use the CallBlocker - Phone app which is the only app i know to answer & hang up the call for (1) numbers in my black list and (2) callers not in my contact. this is a great app because the spam calls never go to VM.

If your using stock phone app go in the settings of the phone app and choose how it will display and another thing you pull your notifications panel down it will bring it up to interact with it

Yeah I was going to suggest the OP swipe down on his notifications tray when the call is ringing in, the answer option could be in there, depending on settings and the app your using, like Mustang suggested 😉
