Can't hear/be heard during calls. Why?

Does anybody have any insight on this issue as it doesn't make much sense to me. I'm wondering if I maybe have somehow accidentally muted something in relation to my phone and thought I would ask here first and try to solve the problem instead of taking it to my provider and paying to have them ship it out and give me a loaner phone. In addition, all other forms of media work with sound with no issue. (Youtube, Play Music.)

I have seen a similar problem in that some incoming calls appear muted to me. Some. Is it possible that there's a specific setting for my Pixel XL's earpiece while using the Phone function?
On a similar vein, I don't see a "Speaker" off/on switch when using the Pixel as a phone - puzzling, that switch is prominent on my old Note 3.
