Can't install rom from SD

First of all, my sincere apologies if this is a repost, tried searching but everything I found confused me.

I rooted using unrevoked and have no trouble installing roms that I downloaded through rom manager, but any other ones that I download to the SD card always say installation aborted once I am in recovery. I'm using clockworkmod recovery.
Someone told me I had to unlock nand, but I thought I already did that since I am able to do nand backups and whatnot.
I'm not an idiot, but I am quite the noob when it comes to this. My evo is my first smartphone and I am learning more each day (got it a few days after launch).
Any help would be greatly appreciated, especially if it is dumbed down as much as possible. Thanks again.

Nothing is wrong with your sd or recovery because if it flashes through rom manager its just an automated process of downloading it to sd and flashing.

How are you putting it on your sd card? If its from the computer, make sure to copy and paste it to the sd card and don't extract anything or change the zip at all.

My question is... can you get into clockwork recovery to flash the ROM/kernel from the recovery menu? Are you full root or did you verify your root? If you cant get into the recovery menu... you might not be full root.

There is a sticky posted here about the first 12 steps of root, followed by choosing the one click method (simpleroot, unrevoked)

Did you happen to use this method or choose a different method?

Again... can you get into clockwork recovery? Do you have Super User App? Is your root verified?

I'm fully rooted, I've flashed roms through rom manager only... if I put roms (zip file) onto the SD from a computer, when I go to recovery it starts to install then about ten seconds later it just says installation aborted. Everything else in clockwork recovery works fine ( nand backup, etc.)

I used unrevoked with a Mac if that helps. I also have superuser, and am able to run setcpu, adfree and other root only apps.
I was able to install and flash cm6 and fresh (among others) through rom manager only, but like I said, doing so in recovery does not work. (It only works in recovery through rom manger. Have I mentioned that? Haha sorry)

Appreciate the help guys.

yea, are you booting into recovery thru rom manager? or are you going into recovery using a different method?

have you tried quickboot?

are you wiping the dalvik cache and cache partition? You need to do that when flashing from recovery!!! I forgot, lol

I've been downloading it through rom manager (which works) and putting them on the SD card by downloading them on my phone straight to there or via PC (which gives the installation aborted thing)

Haven't tried quickboot... is that the same as fastboot option on the bootloader?

i guess, havent used fastboot... go into recovery, wipe cache partition, then go to advanced, the wipe dalvik, then try to flash.

i put my roms in a folder called "for flashing", i flash from there...

dont use rom manager to go into recovery, do it manually or using quickboot

No, this might be the problem. Anything I should know before doing this?

Also, I've only been going to recovery with rom manager to get it to work. When I do manually (through the bootloader) it doesn't flash.

hmm... it shouldn't "flash", should just take you to clockwork.

umm... you should do a nandroid backup. its un recovery as well...

in rom manager, are you using the current clockwork? 2.5.0.1 i think

Yes, my clockwork is the latest one. And one last dumb question (hopefully), after full data wipe and factory reset, will I still be able to use titanium backup to restore all my stuff, or should I back it up via PC?

well, here's what i'd do... backup using a nandroid backup (just in case you lose everything, at least you can restore everything, rom and all settings), download app brain and backup all your apps, then sync, and then do a titanium backup...

just incase you do a data wipe and you cant flash a new rom, you'll be able to flash the recovery and have your last setup...

so...
#1 do all your backups
#2 wipe cache partitions
#3 wipe dalvik cache
#4 data wipe/factory reset
#5 flash new ROM

Wow, I cannot describe how helpful this has been. I asked the same question at another forum (a site of dedicated android "phans") I was just rediculed and told to do more research. I know now where my loyalty stands in the android news front.

I'm currently at work, so ill try all of this once I get home later tonite and let you guys know how it worked out.
Thanks again!

keep us posted... im a little wary of the unrevoked method you used... hoping that you actually achieved fully functional root.

How could I not have root at this point? I've been able to use everything from titanium backup to wireless tether with no problem, and by what I understand this isn't possible without root. I'm even on cm6 right now. Is there a way to do any of this without root?

Haha I gotcha. I just used it since I couldn't find an understandble list of isntructions of how to manually root using a Mac.
I think wiping the cache and whatnot might be the solution. I was going to try that but I didn't wanna lose everything.

You do not have to wipe anything to flash stuff in recovery, whether a wipe is needed or not.

Power off your phone, hold down volume+power and it will take you to the bootloaderfrom there scroll with the volume buttons to recovery and hit power to confirm.

It will now go into clockwork recovery, from there go to install zip from sd, choose zip, and flash it.

Idk if this is what you were doing before but... do that lol. BTW, while your in the bootloader make sure it says s-off. If it doesn't, tell us. Haha.
