Can't install Whatsapp on my Moto X after switching to ART

So, I tried switching to ART and, after rebooting, I started testing all my apps to see how well they run. When I got to Whatsapp, I was getting repeated crashes. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but I couldn't reinstall. When I looked it up on the internet, I found that the problem was not with the app itself, but with ART in 4.4 and that the issue had been addressed in the 4.4.1 update, which isn't available for the Moto X yet. So, I tried switching back to Dalvik, but now I still can't reinstall Whatsapp even in Dalvik runtime. Anyone know how to fix this?

I get an error box when I try to install from the Play Store. "Unknown error code during application install: -24". I tried downloading the apk from the Whatsapp website and sideloading it, but my phone won't install that either.

This is a known issue. Whatsapp doesn't play nice with ART. You have to go back to Dalvik, reinstall whatsapp, then reactivate ART.

I already switched back to Dalvik and it's not letting me install Whatsapp again.

I found the issue. It seems a leftover shared element from Missed It! was preventing it from installing. After I deleted the shared element, Whatsapp installed just fine.

WhatsApp and ART play together just fine on the Nexus 5 with 4.4.2. Whatever the issue is has been fixed.

can you tell me what you deinstalled?? cause i have the same issue.. :(

If you have Missed It! installed for unread notifications and you had set up a shared element for Whatsapp, Missed It! won't delete that shared element. That seems to block the reinstallation of Whatsapp even after you switch to Dalvik. You have to delete the shared element manually.

If you don't have Missed It! installed, then I don't know what it is.

i don't have missed it! installed.. should be something else blocking it :/

After doing a quick Google search for "Google Play Store error code 24," I came across this post in another thread:
I had the same problem installing whatsapp. I tried removing the app entry from data/data/com.whatsapp. It worked! Try out
Cheers!!

Try giving that a shot.

Imprett sure the latest version of Whatsapp works with ART. Install or update the latest version and see if it works.

Just to make sure this info is clearly posted... as per the Whatsapp FAQ:

Due to a bug in Android, WhatsApp could not be installed in Android RunTime (ART) on Android 4.4. The issue with ART has been fixed in the latest release of Android (4.4.1). Please update your OS to 4.4.1 to use WhatsApp with ART. If you are unable to update to 4.4.1, please use Dalvik instead of ART. This is an issue with the way that ART verifies apps, not with WhatsApp. WhatsApp will still function properly in Dalvik.

If you attempted to re-install WhatsApp in ART, your /data/data/ directory may have a latent com.whatsapp folder left behind from the failed install that will prevent you from installing WhatsApp again. Android does not have any UI exposed to resolve this issue. Currently the only known way to remove this file is to either delete the file (only possible if your phone is rooted), or to reset your device to factory defaults.

Emphasis mine. Here's the Google Code issue listing:

Issue 61916: Invalid package error when installing WhatsApp with ART runtime enabled

This happened to me today after I switched to ART and then went back to Davlik because I wanted to use Whatsapp, which did not work with Kit-kat. When I tried to reinstall Whatsapp, I kept getting error message 24. I have not seen anybody mention this online and I have been looking all day.

I decided to go to settings, apps, download manager and clear data.

After this, I tried to download Whatsapp once again and it finally worked.

I suspect that even with the latest Android version, the latest file issue still exists. Re the suggestion to 'clear data' above, once the App is uninstalled it doesn't show in Settings/apps/downloaded.
Even a good file manager doesn't show the com.whatsapp file. I am not inclined to root or reset, so it is WeChat for me.

Did you try what I did; clearing data from your download manager?

it worked for me...

ART doesn't seem to play nice with anything. I have a Galaxy S5 and when I switched over yesterday, everything I did on my phone pretty much puked and I had to switch back to Dalvik. Only stayed on ART maybe a half hour.
