Can't join contacts???

I just switched from an iphone 5 to note2. I have duplicates all over the place. I tried to join contacts but it doesnt work. Am I doing something wrong???

Did you read the instructions here? Importing, exporting, and syncing contacts - Gmail Help

I imported mine via .cvs and then just cleaned them up on the gmail webpage. I find it much easier to manager my contacts on the web with my PC.
