Can't log onto old Droid X. Please help!

[Android Central Question]

I have a Droid X that I used about 5 years ago before switching to an iPhone. I am trying to access some valuable old text messages and pictures with my soon-to-be fiance on this phone for our upcoming engagement. Unfortunately, I have forgotten the lock combination for this phone. I reactivated the phone on my current cell plan so that it would have internet access, and then tried to login using my gmail and password (that I had used on this phone before), but have received nothing but "Invalid username and password" messages. I know that the common response would be to do a factory reset to get into the phone, but that is not an option for me, as the data on the phone is ultimately what I'm after. Really looking for some expert help here!

Welcome to Android Central! What did you do to get to a screen that asked you for your Google account and password? Did you fail the screen unlock multiple times?
