I have a GSM Galaxy Nexus(Asian/Europe version),
as well as a CDMA Galaxy Nexus(Verizon Wireless)
Both phones are in front of me right now.

On the CDMA version, I can silence the built-in camera
shutter sound simply by pressing the volume down
button all the way.

On the GSM version, this does NOT work. Even with
the phone in silence mode, the shutter sound is still
present. I have tried everything but still couldn't silence
it. :(

If anyone with a GSM Galaxy Nexus can silence the
camera shutter, please let me know how you did it.

THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP! :)

Settings>sounds>system volume-all the way down

nope... tried that as well.. didnt' work...

I think I may have found the reason... my GSM GN is still stuck in 4.01. Just found on a UK
forum that owners who forced the 4.02 update didn't have this shutter sound "problem" :(

Guess I'll just have to wait until my phone gets update.

Just delete the audio file or rename it with the extension .bak

On mine on 4.0.1 I can silence my phone's camera shutter sound by pressing volume - buttons repeatedly.

I can't see how you can change "system volume" in ICS (maybe its back in 4.0.2), however on 4.0.1 it would appear that this is not a camera specific volume being changed but the "music, video, games, & other media" level so there is no way to turn off the camera sounds as such.

Some carriers require the shutter sound because it's required by law (so you can't secretly take pictures of people). However like jamontoast mentioned, you can remove\rename the audio file to stop the sound (/system/media/audio/ui/camera_click.ogg). You have to be rooted to do this however.

i just turn my volume all the way down to vibrate. 4.0.1 gsm version here

I have noticed there are 2 volume controls, actually 3. Quickly if you go to your phone dailer pad and then push your volume rocker down that silences the Music, Video, games Volume, as well as the shutter sound.
If you go to settings>Sound>Volumes you will see the 3 volume controls I am taking about. Hope this helps. Let me know if it works for you.
