Can't unlock Nexus 7.

The unlock screen displays normally with a field for entering the password and a cursor. But the keyboard never appears, so I am unable to type it and the tablet switched off. Tried reboot and safe mode but still no keyboard. Please advise if this is a known problem with a fix (hopefully!).
