I just played with the M9 for the second time in store. I kept comparing it to the S6 and I have to say the build quailty and Sense are much better than the S6. I'm really pissed off that I have to get Samsung just because of the camera. This time next year I'm expecting an unbelievable camera from HTC's M10.

Choosing a phone due to camera over build quality and UI is all kinds of crazy in my eyes.

What are you using these photos for? advertisement and print?

The M9 actually takes extremely nice photos and only slightly falls short of the S6.

If your that serious about photo quality get yourself a DSLR because it will blow any phone camera out of the water - Adam

I wouldn't buy a phone just for the camera. I actually bought the S6 and then returned came back to my M8 main reason because of Touchwiz yes it has improved but boy it's so bad with all those bright colours. HTC sense UI kills Touchwiz in everyday.

What reviews and videos have you been looking at online?

This is the problem... People relying in reviews online.

I'm going by the best review possible, the one that gets fed directly to my brain through my senses via my eyes and hands.

I've wowed people with photos taken from my M9, they are a damned site better that any review photos online.

At what point does it make sense to make sacrifices in the 90% of your time spent in the general UI of a device just for the slight gain your going to get when spending the remaining 10% of time on your camera - Adam

I rarely use my phone camera... When I do, it works well enough.

I happened to get a chance to test out the S6 at a Costco this week. Here are my initial impressions.

First, all the Samsung devices were side by side on the table. At a glance it didn't even stand out. It looks similar to the other Galaxy from the front.

The back is glass of course but it feels like hard plastic in your hand. I wasn't wowed by it at all and I can't understand the fuss. The materials are different but it is the exact same design sans the bottom speaker holes.

The screen is just way to bright. I guess you can turn it down but ALOMED displays I find way to oversaturated. I can see how watching videos would be awesome but generally I feel like my retina is on fire staring at it for too long. Which gets me to touchwiz.

That UI is still awful. I experienced some lag but it wasn't even that. Those pastel colours haven't been toned down at all. I guess with more themes coming it can be toned down though. But I just prefer the understatedness of Sense.

The camera is great. If taking pictures was my number one priority I would consider it. But it's not for me. Its to thin and I prefer a curved back. The camera sticking out like it does bothers me. I was just meh about the phone in general.

The edge wasn't comfortable to hold at all. It almost felt sharp on the sides and the curve isn't immersive at all. More of a distraction and gimmick that isn't worth an extra $100.

Long story short. S6 is off my list. Just not feeling it. I get to have a look at the M9 this Friday so I will see what I think of it in person.

Nah. Camera is more than slightly better. Video on the S6 murders the M9 and it isn't close. If a great shooter is at the top of his list it isn't a contest.

I have to agree. We had a second line eligible for upgrade so we also got an S6. Both take a nano-sim so we can switch them out as we like. AT&T doesn't care. I do it all the time.

I have to agree that buying a phone based solely on a camera is dumb. I get that we use it a bit with Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and capturing some memories but overall it's probably only 10-15% of the overall usage of a phone.

If your camera usage is higher, it's time to invest in your hobby properly and get a DSLR.

I know it sounds crazy, but I already have a DSLR canon 7d and I get unbelievable photos from it. The main reasons I value a phone camera over the rest of the device is

1. I don't always have my DSLR on me
2. OIS is essential to get the best photos and videos of my kids running around.
3. I love making documentaries and stop animation with my phone camera.

So yeh, I guess it's an annoying sacrifice I'm willing to make. I have the M7 now and I think it kicks the S6 to the curb in build quality and Sense, but that fricken camera, I just have to have that camera. Arggggggghhh!!!

Actually I don't think it's crazy for someone to prioritize camera, sure they can carry DSLR but the best camera is the one you have in your pocket always. And for someone who likes to capture quick nice pictures of your kids, nature or whatever without getting a DSLR everytime it does matter.

I get preferences are different for everyone so not surprised if someone wants an awesome camera in their phone.

If your willing to make it I hope your happy with the decision in the long run :)

I guess I'm lucky in that if I find a photo opportunity important these days I cannot bare to capture it on anything other than my DSLR.

Also it's good to hear there's a fellow animator on the forums :) - Adam

Its all about priorities. Good pics & footage of the kids and a better quality camera for artwork come before my personal preferences of the phones aesthetics or skin smoothness. Its still frustrating to make that decision and I actually couldn't go through with purchasing the iPhone 6 for the camera , so there is a limit to how far I can push it, but that's the general mode of thinking.

It's odd people question the choices and preferences of others. If your number one priority with a smart phone is the camera, why is that "dumb"? And to suggest someone start carrying a DSLR everywhere (which is what we do with our phones) is fairly absurd. The truth is the S6, the M9, and likely the G4, are mostly a matter of personal preference. None of these phones will ever be an across the board winner. Manufacturers will always make tradeoffs during the design/build process and consumers will need to do likewise as a consequence.

What you are talking about??? All the reviews have said its a revolutionary design...

Just kidding. I completely agree with you on the design. I played with the S6 in Best Buy for a awhile and the glass back just feels like plastic and looks like plastic. When I picked it up, it felt fragile. It does look very similar to the last 2 designs, the only real difference is they squared the corners more. If it wasn't for the signage, I would have had to ask which one was the S6, not to say that is a different story for the M9 that looks almost identical to it predecessor.

When I picked up the M9 it just felt better in my hand. It was comfortable and didn't feel like I was going to break it. It just felt more premium.

I'll take another look at HTC when the M10 launches next year if they decide to continue it. I checked out an M9 in a very quiet store and was pretty disappointed in the low sound quality. I know everyone uses headphones so it maybe doesn't matter, but I just liked to set it down on the table while I worked and had no problem with sound quality with my M8. I can't understand why it would be worse. The camera seems fine to me with some of the manual tweaks suggested so no problem for me there. But yeah, bring on an upgraded M10 with good sound, even better camera and I'm all in. Those suggesting just carry a DLSR is fine but who leaves the house with one except maybe pro photogs. I have a nice one but don't usually have it along unless I'm going somewhere I need it. So a good camera on my phone these days is a nice option and there are some great ones available so HTC should step it up in that regard. Just my .02 :)

This guy tested the sound volume exactly as you described from 20 feet away and he thought it was pretty loud and so do I. Go to 7:00 minute mark and check it out.
