Captivate general sluggishness and poor performance

I've had my Captivate since day one back in July, so I'm well past my 30 days. Initially I was quite happy with the phone, but lately it seems that problems with sluggishness, poor response times, etc., seem to be increasing.

This morning, I couldn't answer the phone when it rang. I repeatedly swiped the answer widget and nothing happened. Often, when I try to launch an app, I have to wait 20-30 seconds for the phone to respond to my tap.

This also happens when inputting text using Swype. I'll swype out the word, and see nothing on the screen. Then it suddenly flashes the trace pattern out and spits a bunch of garbage characters that I didn't enter.

I've tried rebooting and/or removing the battery, but this doesn't seem to help, at least not for long. The FOTA update didn't seem to affect anything. My GPS works ok, but overall the phone is just dang slow and unresponsive most of the time.

At this point, I really would not recommend the Captivate to anyone else. I'm pretty glad I steered my wife towards getting an iPhone4 instead of this phone. :(

I keep hoping that the 2.2/Froyo update will help, but I'm dubious. I'm leaning towards modding it with Cyanogen when it is ready. Any other ideas on performance boosting?

Thanks.

if you don't mind rooting your phone, then "one click lag fix" is for you, there's an app in the market for it

Ok, holding my breath now as OCLF runs... and it seems to work. Original Quadrant score was 902, now scoring 2048. Holy cow!

The phone definitely feels more responsive, but I'll have to run it for a while and see how it holds up.

Thanks! :)

Hmm. I'm ready to try this. Can someone point me to the one click root method and lag fix?

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897

Search the Market for OCLF - once it is installed it has a nice user interface where you can choose to root your phone, install the EXT2 files and the LagFix.

what exactly does the lag fix "fix"? i know lag, but what kind of file changes does it make in general?

It makes a separate partition using the ext2, ext3 or ext4 filesystems, as opposed to the RFS that samsung uses, so that apps have a faster way to read/write data. Quadrant scores shoot through the roof because the filesystem input/output scores are so high after this mod.

What do you have running on your phone? I suggest installing the Task Killer and see what is running all the time. You may simply have too many apps running at once causing issues with memory. I know that when my phone first loads up there are roughly 15-20 things running, I kill most of them down to about 5 things running and I have roughly 148 MB free after that.

I just did the OCLF last night. I was ready to junk the device.
My phone is 10times better!!!!!!

I also DL the Quadrant (free) Benchmark Test.
Before the OCLF 789
After 2250, I think this say it all!
I even went back and donated to the developer.

My apps were all force closing and it was so slow that I just sat it down to do other things.

Now it was not hard but following the instructions closely is advised.

Search the Market for OCLF by Ryan.

DL and Install

Run the program on the phone

All of the directions were there.

the only part I could not find was how to Boot the Phone into Recovery mode.

So, I got on my Google Machine and found the answer.

To boot into Recovery mode:

Hold down Both UP/Down Volume Buttons,
Press and hold the Power button at the same time.

When you see the ATT Screen, release the Power button, but keep holding both Volume Buttons, until you see the Recovery screen. (DOS/Console like).

Follow the rest of the instructions.

GLuck

Before the OTA update i had the OCLF and didn't think it was doing much but wow was i wrong. I don't know if i can do the OCLF after the JH7 update but i miss it. The phone lags like crazy, i press the back button like twice before it responds and backs out twice instead of the one that i just wanted. App drawer takes longer to pop out and apps take longer to launch. Anyone know if i can do the OCLF after the OTA update?

Yes. Download it again and follow the same steps that you did before.

Nice.

Went from 897 Quadrant Score to 1961. Worth a donate

Now to check out other stuff to do with root

*edit* Installed Unleash the Beast and cleaned up a few more things. Now my scores are breaking 2300

AHh thank you guys for the advice. I agree, I rooted my phone and installed the OCLF. MAN, what a difference! 845 on the Quadrant before and 2244 after. MAN, God the phone feels like a different device now. Thank you all for the input! I personally sent Ryan a thank you because it made the phone THAT much better!

Ok I downloaded pressed the root rerouted and then it says updated media. Installing cfc or something like that and goes no further.
Am I suppose to use one of the 4 options I reboot and nothing is available

I had the epic and returned it today for the captivate. i did the oclf and i now have kind of a silly question. I thought the phone came with swype but i cant find it now. if it did, does rooting take that away? This is interesting and i will check out more tomorrow but my gps was not pinpointing my location too well but now after i rooted, it seems to find my location spot on...is it possible that the oclf could help that?

Raven...the option you choose is the one that says something like 'reinstall packages' or something. I think its the last option.

I did what you did the first time as well and just choose the reboot option and nothing new happened when I rebooted.

Thanks will try again

Did it and will see if it helps. Also now when I pressed the check for updates it said unable to connect to server. Then if I press to try again says your 24hrs are not up yet. I would figure if you don't connect you should get another chance. The question because I am rooted is this the reason?

After reboot install the tools in the OCLF.
