Captivate Self Shut Down + Fix

if random shutdown issues persist and it is the software NOT the hardware i will look for the close-est rom to the stock one but without all the bloatware i want music&video player to play my music&videos and i like the floating bubbles wallpaper and wifi, in essence take att rom remove family maps and all the other att crap is what i want :p

Its def a software issue... just like the motorola phones, really well built but software always have the rebooting.

Older devices have this as a known issue from AT&T. Just talked to them as this is an issue with my 2 week old captivate. They are replacing it with a new phone from the proper stock. Call the support line and they can check the imie number to verify stock. If the IMIE last 4 digits are 5394 or lower the unit bad & will need to be replaced.

No SIM auto shut off?

Hi folks, the last 2 nights I have used, well tried to use my Captivate as a alarm clock.

I had the phone powered on with no sim card in it. Last night was the second night in a row where the phone shut down and turned off on its own.

Is this common? Phone is completely stock.

I merged your thread with our existing one. Take a look at it for others having the same problem as well as their answers.

Thanks, I wasnt sure if there was some kind of auto sleep feature when there is no sim card present.

Not sure if it helped or not but I noticed my sim card had some play in it yesterday. I put a small piece of paper on top of the battery and I haven't had a problem and it did not shut off last night. :))

swaping over apps from one phone to another

well I got off the phone with AT&T regarding the shut down issue and they agreed to exchange my phone with another one, My question is how do you swap over the apps that you purchased the app market from the old phone on to the new phone?

Set up new phone with same google account and simply down load again.
You won't be charged again.

Well, you can't say I didn't tell you so! LOL Glad now I did just send mine in and get it repaired, it has worked like a dream ever since!

Shut off on me again last night, this phone is terrible.

Gonna head to the tech support store later today and demand a new one. Thank God I don't have any problems with my rooted aria, like I do with this one.

manufacture date

I have the shut down problem, this is the third phone we have had.
Where do I find the manufacture date?
The imei # is supposed to be ok, but the date I do not see.

thanks very much.

Just another reason why the Craptavate is, well, crap.

Thank you for your insightful, and helpful, comment. Now begone.

If you remove the battery, there is a number that is like 1007, 1008, 1009, 1010, etc. That is the build batch. Three phones in a row with the shutdown problem? That is terrible bad luck. Have ATT give you a new one, preferably one with 1110 (I am assuming those build numbers are dates, they may not be). I would also have the link above at the ATT site describing the issue handy in case you need it at the ATT store. Keep checking for a new enough one to bypass this issue (per the post) and settle for nothing less at this point. You have had enough trouble to bother taking the chance on another one.

Thanks for the info, my number is 1007. Hope to go to the store and talk to my favorite sales guy, a family friend. The phone will have to be sent in I am sure, at least he knows how to talk to customer service. I just un-installed the battery app that seemed to be doing a good job keeping it from shutting down, til yesterday. See what happens til I get to the sales guy.

thanks again.

Mine is a 1007 also, but thankfully not experienced the issue. I was not on stock for long though, and that SEEMS to also be a solution as the problem from the sound of the ATT post, is a combination of the stock software AND certain models. Getting off stock might solve it, but if you were not planning on going down that road, I will not talk you into it :).

Good luck! If you have a guy, that should help even if he does have to send you to Warranty Repair. At least you can reference ATT's own post on the matter to lobby for a new enough model to avoid this issue.

One other note-

ATT has a 3 strike rule on returns. You probably DO have the option of exchanging to a different device if you are turned off enough to your phone.
