Just like the title says. I took a video on my S7 and there are a couple of stills I want to take during playback. Is there a way to do it using the stock gallery like on older versions?

If you tap edit under the video there is a video editor option. You have to download it and I haven't done that so I'm not sure that being able to grab a still photo from the video is there. If that doesn't work you could always do a screenshot as a "better than nothing" option 😀

I don't think that's a built-in option anymore, other than taking a screenshot :( You can take stills while taking the video, but the option to do so while playing the video is no longer there. There might be 3rd party apps that do that, though. I wanna say VLC Player, but I can't be sure, haven't used it in a while.

It's not there. The video editor just lets you add effects and trim the video, but not grab stills.

I tried downloading that and when it opened it said something about an overlay setting and wouldn't go any further so I uninstalled it

The Overlay usually comes from apps that 'hover' over other apps. The most common culprit is Facebook's Messenger when chat heads are enabled. Force-stop that and then you'll be able to set permissions for the Video Editor (it probably needs permission to access your files, otherwise it can't edit the videos).

Ok, I know this won't replace being able to grab a still straight from the camera but this is a work around that might work for your needs. I have VLC on my desktop and tablet but didn't have it on my phone so I installed it. There is no "take a snapshot" in the mobile version of this excellent software. However, you can transfer your movie to your computer/open it in VLC/navigate close to the spot where you want the still photo/click on the "Frame by Frame" option till you get to your desired still/go to Video/Take a Snapshot. The snapshot will be saved (Windows) under My Pictures. Works great :)
