Car charging with navigation doesn't work?

I have a max 1000 milliamp (1amp) car charger with the usb cable that came with the Nexus and if I'm streaming music and using navigation it doesn't charge the battery. If I check the battery status it shows as charging (AC) which I've read is the better of the two. What can I do to actually get it charge? Buy a higher amp car charger? Do the higher amp chargers damage the battery? Thanks!

(1) It will only draw 1 amp, if I recall correctly.

(2) By not charging do you mean the charging symbol does not come up, or are you simply discharging at a higher rate than you're charging? If that's the case, there's not much you can do other than prioritize (music or navigation, etc.).

Yes, it shows up as charging but it is discharging at a higher rate.

Then I don't believe there's much you can do. Make sure WiFi and 4G/LTE are off. Are you running a kernel/rom? You can look into that, see if you can save power on that end.

I have similar problems, and what I've done is simply choose one or the other. On my crappy car charger it still gets outpaced (by a bit), but it's not going to completely drain quickly.

Not running a custom kernel. Stock build version 4.02 I think.

For long trips it kinds of sucks that it won't charge. :(

FWIW, iPhones also discharge faster when plugged in and streaming music and using navigation. So, yeah, prioritize.

My Samsung infuse will discharge too if I also have the screen on and gps at the same time, the display is one of the biggest killers. If it is a long trip turn you screen off when you don't have a turn for a long time, when you hear you have a turn comming up turn the screen back on.

I use Co-Pilot Live for navigation on long trips because it uses locally stored maps. I found the data stream required to run Google Navigation to be extreme enough to discharge quicker than I could charge. I still prefer Google Navigation for short in town navigation.

Also, get your phone out of the sun and away from any heat blowing out your vents. I do most of my driving in AZ and found that a windshield mount exposed my phone to too much sun which made the phone run hot and discharge quicker. After discovering this I switched to a vent mount cradle which worked great during the summer when I was blowing cold ac out my vents, but once winter hit I started running heat out my vents and had the hot phone problem again. Now I use a ProClip cradle that keeps my phone out of the windshield and away from my heater vents. Keeping your Nexus cool will work wonders when running navigation.

Try a 2.1 amp charger. They're under $10 online. I have one, but it can still manage to discharge faster than it's charging.

Dim your screen. If you keep it 100%, even if you let navigation dim it it's going to use more power than the average charger can provide. I usually don't go above 50%
