Since updating to 4.4, my wife's N4 was syncing every second, and burned through 75% of her data usage in 2 days when she was not on WiFi.
Solved the problem by removing and re-adding the account and then disabling contact sync.
Looking on the google product forums it seems to be a pretty wide spread problem, so you might want to check your exchange account to avoid a nasty surprise on your next bill!
