Carrier IQ - officially real & evil

Dang!! So much for that post "Is IQ real and do you care" I guess is very real and not some tricks the devs use to make us use their ROMs. Good job to everyone who works hard to get this crap off our phone.

You guys have k0nane formerly of ACS Syndicate to thank for the removal of CIQ on all our rooted Sprint based phones.

Many doubted him in the early days of this and said it was just smoke and mirrors but I think this seals the deal proving he wasn't telling no lie ;)

Thanks k0nane!

For those of us not in the know - how? Links to the details would help.

Indeed. How can I tell if this is active on my phone still? What would we need to do to remove it?

It is active on your phone UNLESS you are rooted with a custom ROM that had it removed? So are you rooted and do you have a NoCIQ ROM? No? Then you have it and it is active. Once upon a time I think maybe it was prior to FROYO, you could actually see this service running as "IQAgent", but I think they blanked it out to keep you from seeing it.

Rooted? Yes.
Custom ROM? No.

I ran the tool listed in the other thread and it gave a total score of 440. There is an android.IQ process that I found in Running Services so I expect that is it. Damn...

Yeah, me too. I haven't run a tool to detect it yet, but I remember seeing IQAgent as a running service some time ago, just don't remember if it was Eclair or Froyo, but definitely don't see it in GB so I suspect it is hidden somehow.

Here are two screenshots from mine. It is under a service conveniently called "Android System." It has a stop option which will make it go away from the Running Services screen, but after quite a while, it will show up again with the same time running as other processes from startup.

I think this whole CIQ thing is simultaneously upsetting and probably a little blown out of proportion.

Companies need ways to identify problems with phones and networks in actual use day to day. How else do they improve services and identify problems?

Nevertheless, it's absolutely shocking that there is a running log of every button pressed, every number dialed, reduplication of text messages, and God knows what else.

But seriously, what can they do with all this data? Parsing the billions of keystrokes and words, etc. must be a supercomputing nightmare. How could they possibly be collecting and screening all this personal information? Hard to believe they actually could.

But then again, why do they record such irrelevant and personal actions?

Irritating.

Hi folks -

If you're on an Epic and are not running either a ROM with CIQ removed (thanks to my mod), or my noCIQ mod, you have CIQ active. The same applies to the Epic Touch.

I think I remember from a long time ago when you first found Carrier IQ, you said it was on there but not activated. So technically, are the people who don't have either of those files flashed safe?

Or you can just buy an Nexus which doesn't have it. ;-)

You are correct about it being disguised as "Android System," I can confirm that as well.

My epic is rooted. When I look at the running applications, it's clearly there and running. How do I get rid of it?

So it is on my rooted Epic 4g. My worry is that I run a few programs that I know Sprint would not be happy with me doing (Roaming Control since I have a cabin where Sprint Service Sucks and Verizon Works & WiFi Tether) I want this program OFF my phone. Anyone have a way of doing it with out a custom ROM?

You are already rooted, so load a ROM that has it removed. Easy...
