Chamfer Angle & Build Variance

I've done a preliminary search but came up empty handed. I bought both the black/silver and carbon phones hoping to pick a favorite based on color. However, there's more to It than that.

There is a significant difference in chamfer angles. The silver one is smaller making the flat sides wider and buttons off center. The carbon is deeper making it feel differently and look more symmetrical.

Additionally, the screen on the silver is tolerable when viewed through polarized sunglasses. The carbon is absolutely black and unreadable. Both are improved by using the Spigen Crystal protectors.

Anyone else experience this variation?

Don't have mine yet. Interested to hear what others have to say.

The comment about the silver having off-center buttons is incorrect, in my case. The volume rocker and power are perfectly centered along the side wall.

Seem to only be able to do one pic at a time...

Your buttons are centered. Your trays are not, which is normal.

The USB port on this carbon one is like a knife's edge. My pinky seem to want to rest against it too. It is a bit uncomfortable.

The buttons are centered on my carbon. Wonder why there would be a chamfer angle difference?

It is machined in one go. There could be variations. Oh man why does it even matter? :o

I can understand you being concerned about the screens. Don't over think these one or two degrees man no no no its not good for your health :D

I wouldn't say I'm overthinking it. As an engineer, I fully understand manufacturing variability. It is just that I received the carbon one yesterday after having the silver for a week and a half. When I picked it up, it felt different in hand (better & thinner actually), cases fit differently (better oddly), and the USB port feels like a razor resting on my finger. The silver one isn't perfect either, the holes for the SIM and SD cards had to be drilled twice to make it work. They are fully functional, so its a non-issue.

Really, I just wanted to see how much variability there is in these phones....variability is common, but it is also the main impact to quality, cost, and velocity in a manufacturing environment. I guess I'm professionally intrigued more so than concerned.

I guess with the loss HTC is facing they did the best they could to get these phones out as similar as possible. Of course with the reputation they have you never expected this from them. But it's okay I think people with one HTC 10 won't take this as an issue.

But I can understand your intrigue.

I have recessed sim and sd card trays. It sort of annoys me that they aren't flush, but I am not losing sleep over it. Does anyone else have trays that go in deep like this?

My trays recess if I push them in firmly. I try to just push them far enough to be flush.

FYI - I wish my carbon phone looked like that. My card trays are so close to the chamfer I can remove them and use the razor sharp edge to shave.

Hmm I guess that is true, I don't HAVE to push them all the way in. I didn't really understand what you meant at first about the chamfer but I see what you mean now and that would probably bother me. It clearly is cut a bit too far to the edge.

Bad process, bad product. I'm a manufacturing engineer, and I can't believe their product would vary that much. Their tolerances should be smaller for such a small product. What's really alarming is that on the black one, the tray looks like it's almost in the chamfer. Maybe they just had a poorly controlled process initially, but still had to meet demand, so they let these out the door. That's my guess.

I'm a mechanical engineer and have worked as a manufacturing engineer. In either role, product design or manufacturing, there would be no way these product deviations would have made it out the door. It is obvious the quality control measures in place are not sufficient.

If customers are paying a premium price, they deserve a premium product. The two phones I got, are not acceptable from a design and function standpoint. I may be over critical, but that's what 10 years working as an engineer striving for functional and aesthetic perfection does to a guy.

My phone's will likely be returned, the carbon one for sure....but it is on backorder. Hopefully, that means a new lot and better quality. We shall see.
