I'm asking for my girlfriend. I have a BlackBerry Priv and to apply icons I can do it directly from the launcher's settings. On her S7 things don't seem to be so simple.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Go into settings themes and choose icons and install from there or a completely different theam then change icons there you can also change wallpaper or from your album menu too if you want a pic you have or took
There is a few ways to mix it up but go to themes

I saw that but that requires me to install the icon pack from the Samsung Store. She has free and paid icons from the Play Store she'd like to apply. Is that not possible without either a different launcher or the use of yet another app? Seems convoluted on a Samsung device.

If you would like to use icons from the Play Store without a 3rd party launcher you can use Awesome Icons. It will allow you to use any icons from any icon pack in the Play Store. It will only change your home screen icons though, it will not change the icons in the app drawer. If you want to change the icons in the app drawer you will need to use a 3rd party launcher.

Here is the link for awesome icons.

I do recommend awesome icons works amazing and can even make custom ones. Or pick up a launder (action or nova) to do it all in one shot

Thanks for the help. That's what I'm trying to avoid doing. Hilarious how Samsung doesn't incorporate this stuff. Such a big name in the industry and you get zero freedom.

Nope. No confusion here. Basic Android lets you do this. The fact they'd remove the option is just incredible.
