character counting on sms

[AC Question]

My samsung galaxy j5, 2016 had an update yesterday. Since then it no longer does a character count on sms texts.

What can I do to reinstate or enable it please

I had the exact same problem straight after an android update to version 6.01. A couple of other issues too but this one's bugging me the most right now. I thought it was due to a change in theme but the character count has just disappeared so I have no way of keeping am eye on my text or when it's going to switch me to the fee paying MMS service. Oh and I'm using the default app for texting.
