Ive had the Evo since launch day and every thing has been going smooth and today i woke up to find it not charging and found the only way it will charge is to jam the cord as hard as possible into the port and hold it there and ive tried 2 other cords and the problem just repeats itself. is this something i can fix myself or do you need to send it in for repair?

Unfortunately it sounds like the usb port is loose on your EVO. I just recently had to replace my EVO for that very issue. If you have insurance Sprint will replace your phone if the port has not physically broken off for free. They will replace it with a refurb unit though. Take it in to the repair center and see if they can fix it there. If not you will have to wait a day or 2 to get a new one. IF you search the forums you will find a thread discussing this very issue. Hope all turns out well.

I had the same problem with my Pre, when I was using it. I could feel the port moving when I plugged it in.

I have the same exact issue that started on Friday. I will be taking my phone to Sprint tomorrow to see if I can get it replaced.

Replacing for free means it's not an insirqnce replacement through Asurion (the provider) but a Sprint warranty replacement. You have a 1 year warranty on the device from defects, and the warranty replacements are refurb units. Insurance covers lost or stolen or physically damaged phones. For defective phones, you should use the non-deductible warranty replacement.

I have read on multiple forums that this issue happens fairly often with EVOs but Sprint classifies it as physical damage and you will have to pay the $100 deductible from Asurion.

anyone know how best buy would handle this cause thats where i have my insurance through.

I am sure best buy would just give you a replacement phone and it will probably be under the manufacturers warranty unless there is other physical damage to the phone.

While this sounds right I just got a new screen/bezel/back plate put on my EVO for physical damage all for free because I pay for the insurance. My EVO is basically a brand new device except for the motherboard. However the USB port being loose could be a different story.

I am having the same issue, and after a trip to my local sprint repair shop, I was told $100.00 to replace through Asurion. I am SO annoyed. I can't seem to locate other threads about this issue. Any links would be helpful.

So, if I have to spend $100.00 for this should I just try to go with an external battery charger for the next six months until I am eligible for a new device? I guess six months is a long time to go without being able to charge the phone.

I had the USB problem on my Evo. They charged me 35.00. And sent me a refurbished phone. That phone ended up having software problems. So I got a brand Evo for 35.00. The tech guy told me that the Evo is returned a lot for this reason. They couldn't fix it so they just replace the whole phone.

Sent from my EVO using tapatalk.

I hope I never have that problem. So far so good.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Just a quick word of advice....Be careful when using your phone while its charging (especially in the car). The connection to the usb port of your phone will be twisted back and forth and this will cause damage to the port.

I've actually have had two friends with this same problem. They've ended up going back to Sprint and got a new phone.

I actually haven't "normally" charged my phone for a few weeks now. I went with one of those 3-batteries-and-a-wall-charger deals on ebay (like $10) and just swap the batteries out as needed. I was surprised that the batteries seem to last longer than my OEM battery, but then again, they are newer. Also by using the wall charger, I actually get a fully charged battery versus the Evo's guessing game of a battery charge.

i just got my evo couple days after christmas and now my car charger (i ordered thru radio shack online) i have to hold it a certain way for it to charge..it just started that yesterday....but the actual HTC usb cable has no problems...weird!

Thanks for the response KMachine. I am on day four of using only a battery charger. I ordered the Seidio one last week, and am waiting on my $10.00 version and the extra batteries! I, too am seeing better battery life using the battery charger. I tried calling SPrint again, and it seems that I am on some permanent "damaged goods" list with Sprint. So, although I found them to be sympathetic, I still am in the same boat!

That was my first clue to something being wrong with my charging port. About three weeks after that happened, my charging port quit completely.

The same issue has happened with both my daughter's Evo in April, and now mine. Hers was replaced on the spot with a new phone, not a refurb, at no cost. I took mine to the local Sprint store today and will also be getting a replacement. But.. I have to wait "five business days." Fortunately I have a spare battery and wall charger. The port isn't completely dead yet, though. It will still charge if I plug the charger in and wiggle it till the light comes on then leave it alone. We got ours in July '10, I wonder if the initial batch of phones didn't have USB port issues.

Mine started having the same issue yesterday. My wife's has been having periodic issues for some time. New cords seem to help for a while until they lose some of their snug-ness.

So, if I take my phone in (which is rooted) for replacement per TEP, will I run into problems?
