Charging the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition

The Note comes with a 2.1A charger.
If using USB, current is limited by design. (500mA for USB 2.0 and 900mA for USB 3.0)
It's no wonder it takes a long time to charge from the PC if you have less than 1/2 (or 1/4!) the current supplied by the OEM charger.

I've never seen my tablet stop charging when the screen goes to sleep.
Are you using a dedicated charging cable, or a data cable?

PC USB ports max out about 700ma (.7 amp) which is about 1/3 the output of standard Samsung tablet charger, 2000ma (2 amp) ....

On Samsung wall transformers the "+" & "-" data leads are shorted in transformer plug, this signals tablet it is plugged into highout put (2 amp) charger... Cable has pretty little do to with charge rate other than it may have small wire size (generic off the shelf cable) that may be current/voltage limiting...

Read the USB Working Group's implementation agreement (linked here under "battery charging specifications")
USB.org - USB Power Delivery
For 1,1 (adopted April 15 2009), USB 2.0, is 500mA, USB 3.0 is 900mA
For 1.2 (adopted March 15 2012) aka USB OTG, the minimum charging current available is 1,500mA.

You may measure 700mA with an inductive meter, but that is the device itself limiting current, not the USB port's output by design.

Shorting pins does work for Samsung devices, but best practices are to use a 1.5kΩ resistor across the data leads, as defined in the standard for downstream charging.

There are plenty of cheap USB cables that are not going to pass 1 1/2A without popping like a fuse.
Other than the OEM Samsung cable, I like Blackberry cables because of their quality and the fact that genuine cables are almost free on Ebay since the bottom fell out of RIM.

Exactly Dale. It's not rocket science. Just don't drain the battery ( I have mine set for 15% warning), use the charger Samsung gave you and plug it in whenever you like for as long as you like turned on or off and enjoy.

And, since you obviously know what you're talking about, what do you think could cause a battery to "tire" over time? I've seen this happen with an Android phone here and there, and I'm thinking my Note's battery level is going down more quickly than it once did. the battery pack is easy enough to replace, and I'm thinking of doing so, with another 8220 mAh aftermarket battery from NewPower99.

Lithium ion batteries tire overtime because they lose their potential energy. Let's say that a battery has a capacity of 8000mah. The way said battery works is similar to a boulder falling down a mountain. The 8000mah would be the length of the mountain, the boulder represents the actual energy/charge in the battery. Whenever the device is on the boulder is falling down the mountain. When the boulder reaches the ground (bottom of said mountain) the only way for the device to work is for the boulder to go back up the mountain. The electricity from the charger pushes the boulder back up the mountain so it can fall again. A charge cycle is when the battery goes from 0% to 100%. Every time the battery completes a charge cycle the mountain gets shorter meaning their is less mountain for the boulder to fall from. When the mountain disappears the battery is essentially a glorified brick. Batteries typically can take 1000 charge cycles. Meaning they can last over 2 years. Their is another twist, namely the lower the boulder is the harder it is to push it back up and it can get damaged aka damaging the battery when it is too low. These are the two biggest ways that a battery "tires". I hope this answered your question.

(Fixed) my red x issue on note 2014 after exhausting every search on internet...mind u i was using a non-samsung charger to begin w that started all this...after buying an original samsung charger, i plugged it initially into usb slot of a laptop for at least a couple of hours and then plugged it back into samsung wall charger and presto adapter is getting warm now which lets me know its charging like normal once again. Keep in mind too that previously it was telling me that i had usb connected that i need to plug a power source in, driving me nuts.

USB slots on laptop and desktops are only capable of 500-600ma (milliamp) of power output..... When you use standard Samsung USB charger it is capable of 2100ma output... The main difference is with the Samsung wall wort, the data leads ( - & + (not power leads)) are shorted together in power supply and tablet is smart enough to see this condition and know its on a high output charger and hence no red X...

My cable and samsung charger are working fine. I use them for my External Battery "Anker 13000 mAh"
When I connect the cable I get the battery image, and then just after the screen goes black and it's not charging the battery

1 My Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition worked fine for 2 years
2 Then recently I discovered that it did not charge the battery
3.1 I opened it, disconnected BOTH the cable to the battery and to the screen
3.2 Waited for some minutes and connected the cables
4 Managed to charge the battery again but only when it was turned off and only after 'disconnect' and 'reconnect' the charger cable 2, 3 times
5.1 When I connected the tablet to my computer I got the red 'X' and Samsung Kies 3 had problems to recognise the tablet
5.2 Got the message (up left corner on the tablet) "usb is disconnected" when I connected it to the PC and "usb is connected" when I disconnected ??
5.3 Disconnected and connected the cable fast and got it recognised by the PC / Kies 3
5.4 Did a backup of my tablet (apps and files)
5.5 My tablet behaved like this for some time
5.6 Then the tablet was not recognised by the PC so I did a "Reset Back to Factory Settings" but still the same
6.1 Now my battery is at 0% and not possible to charge
6.2 Did step 3 again but nothing changes ... only this black battery on the screen
6.3 Tried with another cable and with my external battery ... only this black battery on the screen

Have you considered that your port may be broken or full of debris?
(You seem to say you have a usb problem, not a charging problem)
Replacing the port should be around $25 at any competent repair shop.

First thing I would do is forget using external battery and see if you can get battery charged with Samsung (2100ma) charge and known good cable..... Trying to use non standard power sources does not help when trying to trouble shoot.... The red X comes from not using a 2100 ma charger or a bad cable or low power USB power source like provided on a PC or defective component like USB jack or battery...

Other possibility is your battery has a internal failure and needs replacement... Could be a cell in battery has failed and gone into a "open stare" and can no longer be charged or used....

The fact that table will energize the battery screen does indicate it is getting power from charge or there is actually some life in battery...

Instead of continuing your frustration with home grown or misdirected solutions that are not working, you should get professional help for diagnosing your problem and replacing parts as necessary....

The poster above says they 'cannot get a data connection to their pc'.
That they chance upon having the tablet recognized by repeatedly 'stabbing' the micro usb socket.


This isn't a charging problem -or a cable problem- this is an issue with the connection in (or of) the tablets socket.

All it really takes is one good drop or bump with the cable plugged in to break the connections loose from the board.

Hello what charger should i get? i never got the original charger for this tablet and the one im using right now takes forever for it to fully charge the tablet.

You can't go wrong with the OEM Samsung charger and cable.
Go to the Sammy website and get the model# fot the tablet charger, then search for one at a good price.
I bought my tablet used and had this same problem when trying to charge with my existing phone charger.
