Does USB 3.0 charge faster than 2.0? I have the original adapter and cord that came with my S5 and haven't used it because I didn't think there would be a difference

I think via a PC USB port it does charge faster, but it still pales compared to the wall charger.

USB 3 is only measurably faster for data transfer. The power output difference is very miniscule.

3.0 is just data transfer rate (its a bit faster if your USB port on the other device ((laptop)) is also 3.0).
to get the fast charging that the Galaxy s5 offers ( no its not like the newer phones with the ultra rapid fast charge but it is still quite fast) you need a cable & charger that are both capable of delivering the 2.1A charge. lesser rated cables & Chargers (say 1A) won't charge as fast and sometimes not at all...

It does charge faster. I used my S5 and Note 3 charger at home and an old charger when out. The home charged much faster. Also the replacement I first bought at Best Buy, did not charge as fast as the Samsung charger. We had a long discussion about this several months ago here.

Seems counter intuitive
Your old charger was apparently not able to supply the needed 2.1A - that's why it charged slower.

Actually, any charger that wasn't the 3 did that. The brand new Best Buy one didn't work either. Nor any other replacement cords that were bought to keep my cat from chewing on the Samsung cords.

Did you check the small print on the chargers? If the old one or a generic one was not rated for 2.1A (2100 mA) it would charge slower. The data cable also has to be rated to carry 2.1A to transfer that current from the charger to the device.
The data leads (wires) have nothing to do with charging, only data transfer (2 separate wires for data & 2 for charging in the cables) So a USB 2.0 cable rated to carry 2.1A would charge the S5 just as fast as a USB 3.0 as long as both are rated to carry 2.1A. Same with the chargers as long as both produce 2.1A. Data cable length can also play a small part...

I used the Samsung block. Way back with the N3 and S5, many of us did testing on this. Even timed charging.

Sadly, it seems most off the shelf data cables are not rated anywhere near 2.1A (2100 mA) - most are around 1A (1000mA). You have to be careful when buying a replacement & read the small print when it comes to mA's. Otherwise your S5 will charge very slowly..

And the others I had were Samsung cables from my previous phones. I only buy Samsung phones.

The white cord and plug tht came wth the phone will charge faster than any other charger. Trust me ive paid close attention to this over this year and a 1/2. I get mad wen my wife takes it to work. I own 2 S5s and she also has 1

I agree completely..

I agree :) it does charge fast - it has thick wires to carry 2.1A to the phone.
I have an S4 USB 2.0 rated at 2.1 A that will also charge my S5 in the same amount of time
