I cannot seem to get chat bubbles turned on for the Messages app on my 3XL. I have turned on the Bubbles both in the Settings and made sure that all messages can be "bubbled".

What am I missing?

I'm on a 4XL and I cannot get mine to work either. I'm not even able to set someone as a priority. I think that's what the problem is.

On my Pixel 3 XL, chat bubbles work but my Gboard crashes like I said.

Have any of you turned off the Display Over Other Apps permission for any apps? On my phone, I don't see Messages listed there, but the bubbles might be covered by Device Personalization Services.

Check how it looks like on my phone...

That image is pretty low-res on the forum website, but I can see that you have Device Personalization Services allowed. Oh well, it was worth a shot.

This should definitely be sent as feedback to Google in the system settings Feedback option.

Yeah trust me I know dude. Lol. Every image I upload is low-res. Unfortunately. Yeah it was worth a shot and who knows what's going on lol ugh

I mean honestly, what I've been doing is just using the regular messaging app which works of course and just doing the quick reply and then the notification shade like old school Android lol slightly annoying since we have chat bubbles but it is what it is...

Somebody told me that you need to have Google messages beta installed to have chat bubbles working. Have you tried that?

Earlier this morning I got Chat Bubbles to work with Telegram but not with Messages. After reading your post I installed Messages Beta.... Chat Bubbles work!
Interestingly when I received a chat from Telegram and Messages only one Bubble displays but opening that there are two sub-bubbles showing. One for each which allows for switching between the two.

Yeah I'll admit, the way in which chat bubbles works with the compatible apps, is a bit weird. Gboard isn't working with Chad bubbles on my phone for some reason because it crashes, but in general, it doesn't seem like chaba was allowed you to have a long running list of people conversations until they crash. For a few hours at a time, but not longer than that. I just go into the regular Android messaging app to message or from the quick reply alert in the notification shade like old school Android on my phone still. I mean don't get me wrong, Chat bubbles are very cool and interactive, if you can get them to work correctly for a long period of time hahaha.

I've had a chat bubble on my screen since 8:47am Central Time this morning. Gboard never has crashed.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I was part of the beta program for 11, and the fact that from beta 2, to beta 3, to the final version, gboard was working fine and beta two, but in beta three time and now in the final version, zero board just crashes in chat bubbles mode. It's fine everywhere else...

Maybe you need to do a factory reset.
I just set up working Bubbles on my wife's Pixel 4a and her Gboard isn't crashing.
Since our keyboards are not crashing with Bubbles it appears there is an issue with your phone.
I hope you can get this worked out.

Hi yep yep it's with my phone. A hard reset would probably fix it. But I have a work profile with Outlook on my phone and it's been in the *** and it's just not worth it to me I know what you mean though.

I do understand. I've had to do several factory resets on other phones....major pia. It's a classic case of approach/avoidence.
Good luck with your phone.

Haha, hey thanks very much. I mean the chat bubbles are cool and interactive, don't get me wrong. It's just not worth it over hard resetting my Pixel that's the thing ya know? Usually, in the last couple of betas, all of the minor issues i was experiencing were all ironed out. This time, this specific Gboard crashing issue wasn't. I mean to me, it's whatever. Lol as long as I can go into the messaging application, and respond back to messages, I don't care too much. I mean utilizing the Gboard within chat bubbles would be cool, don't get me wrong, but at the end of the day, it's not a deal breaker, so to speak... Thankfully, in my Pixel 3 XL, everything else works as it should so no worries there. I will be honest here though about one other issue though... Here's an interesting test case I did: at the gym I thought to myself let me exit the beta program of hey Google app, uninstall, reinstall it as a regular production level app, and see if that fixes my Google Assistant Android Auto issue where my music doesn't automatically continues to play after I do a Google Assistant command. Well, once I got in the car, my head unit fully rebooted and shocked me, it's all back to normal. I'm shocked!

Yep yep I believe that's still the case.

Well I just joined the beta version of Google messages and still no chat bubbles. I have it set to all conversations can bubble. Since this was one of the major updates touted for Android 11 I'm perplexed as to why it is not functioning. I bet if I did a factory reset it would work but I'm not going through that trouble just for chat bubbles. Any ideas out there?

Go into Messages settings; tap on Bubbles; then tap on whatever choice you want. See screenshots below. There are two more choices that aren't showing in screenshot 2.

Question for you though, when you join the beta program for Android messages, did you actually update the Android messages application in your play store? Because you still have to update the application version.
I mean you're right, once you update the app version in your play store, chat bubble should work...
