[Chatter] "Where everybody knows your name ..."

Re: [Chatter] I <3 JB

I love that beer - so underrated. I mean, how can you not appreciate a beer that has pure "Marzen Motherland" ingredients? Flying Dog has perhaps some of the best looking artwork of any brewery to boot.

I don't think I've actually had it. Was looking for a fall beer and figured why not?

100% agree on the artwork though.

Re: [Chatter] I <3 JB

If you can find it (not sure where they distribute) Great Lakes Octoberfest is easily one of, if not the best Octoberfest-style beers I've had. It's amazing.

And this is why I need a proper job. Jesus Christ. It's also why you don't have brand new Corvettes in the ghetto.

Yeesh. If someone were going to steal my wheels, I'd at least appreciate if they left the car undamaged.

Or just take the whole thing and let me get a new vehicle with the payout.

How would you describe an Octoberfest
beer? I saw Yeungling has one and was thinking about getting it the other day but was unsure so I went with UFO Pumpkin instead.

I will now begin searching for this as well. I need a real liquor store closer to my residence...

@ XFan

Good call on the UFO, though of the Pumpkin variety, it doesn't get my highest marks. Neverthless, a good grab-n-go for the Pumpkin style.

An "oktoberfest" style beer is typically malt-heavy. Take a lager style (crisp, clean - Yeunglingish) and add more caramel, softness, and a copper tinge. The Great Lakes, for example, has a bit more of a "butter" in the flavor. It's basically what lagers should always taste like - more flavor, more body, more alcohol, and more complexity.

To be fair, I'm just not a fan of the lager/pilsner variety, though I appreciate their crispness in the beer spectrum. So yeah, Oktoberfest beers are typically good for those who like standard lager/pilsners, because the roots are there but with "more."

EDIT: For Oktoberfests, they often use a variety of malts to achieve those added features - caramel, toffee, more "roasty" malts, which add more flavor and sweetness.

It's not too bad. It's my first pumpkin so I have nothing to compare it to. I was told that Pumpking is the best but it's $8 a bottle.

Re: [Chatter] I <3 JB

Pumpking is awesome if you're in the North/Northeast. It's just huge on sweetness and malt. Not a ton of balance but super creamy and TONS of pumpkin. It is, quite literally, the PumKING when it comes to flavor density.

But again, that imbalance exists and has a marginally crippling effect. As such, Schlafly (out of St. Louis) has, in my opinion, the best Pumpkin Ale, appropriately named with the same name of the style. It's pumpkin-y, but with a bit more spice and a hop profile that actually balances.

The UFO is similar in balance but lacks the punch and severity on the palate. It's good if you want to try a pumpkin beer, but it is far from the best.

Re: [Chatter] I <3 JB

I don't think they sell Schlafly around these parts (Ohio) but I will keep an eye out for it.

Re: [Chatter] I <3 JB

Hm, they might but I don't know. I'm in NKY about 100 yards from Cincinnati, and we have Schlafly. But, KY doesn't have Victory, Yeungling, Bear Republic, etc. and OH does. It's hit or miss.

If you've ever an excuse to come to KY in the next month, the Schlafly is worth trying. That being said, 98% of their other beers are super mediocre and boring. But they've the best pumpkin beer, somehow.

Re: [Chatter] I <3 JB

Stringer, you need a beer blog or something. Just so I can follow your tastings and try your recommendations lol

Re: [Chatter] I <3 JB

Hahaha, right? Instead, though, I'm wasting my time at a job I've little-to-no interest in, and with few perks.

Things-are-a-changing, and one of my first goals once I get my new place (as a single dude with time on his hands) is to perhaps start some sort of beer tasting blog.

Or, OEMs could just embrace Ubuntu for Android and we can all keep our existing desktops / laptops...

Re: [Chatter] I <3 JB

Yeungling's Oktoberfest is absolutely horrid.

My favorite Oktoberfest is Paulaner. Flying Dog is the runner up.

My favorite style of beer is an English bitter, Old Peculier being my favorite.

My favorite Stout is Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout.

Also, Baltimore is coming out strong in the first game. Let's do this ish.
