Because your looking for something really, really good!

But you need to think with your brain, not your heart.

You said the laptop is for school, you can get a nice ASUS for $250 at BestBuy.

There are also some HPs and Toshibas for less than $350.

That's if the use of said laptop is mainly for school.
Maybe browsing the forums and other stuff at home.

Why spend a lot more?

Yes, mainly for school, but I'm probably going to be using for 2-3 years at least. The laptops that are $300-400 all have Intel Core 2 or Intel Pentium Processors . Those are already extremely outdated...
They also have HDDs, 1336x768 displays, have battery life of less than 5 hours and weigh over 5 pounds

Have you looked at any of the tablet pc's from Asus, Dell, HP, etc? Chromebook maybe? Samsung Tab Pro 12.2 with a keyboard?

Yeah, but I might need to use some software that is only available on laptops (I'm an engineering student).
