Choosing the Nexus 5X over the Nexus 6P

Re: Why did you buy or why are you considering the 5X over the 6P?

Size is the real reason for me. Cant stand dealing with a phablet. A distant second would be price.

Re: Why did you buy or why are you considering the 5X over the 6P?

I don't get why people are so hung up on this. If I'm remembering correctly, one of the "hands on" articles from the event yesterday said that the speaker was "insanely" loud. As long as the quality is halfway decent (remember, it's a phone and not a Bose surround sound system), I don't really see what the huge benefit is of two speakers versus one on a phone. I'm no expert (and correct me if I'm wrong), but surely the average ear does not even notice that audio is coming out in stereo when the speakers are not even 5 inches apart.

It doesn't matter to me. I was being sad for the guy who wanted it lol

I rarely if ever use the speakers on my phone so I don't care one way or the other. That being said most reviews I read said the speaker comparison from 5x to 6p is a big difference, in favor of the 6p obviously.

Agreed... but in the spec wars, this is serious ammo!

If the 5x is as good as its Specs and the Google hype in SF, I think the money thing is worth it, especially with, 32g. I'm waiting for a review or two.

Let me add, that in over 2 years of daily use, there was never an N4 hardware problem. Further, KitKat and Lollipop have been great.

Re: Why did you buy or why are you considering the 5X over the 6P?

Just ordered my 5X, main reason its an LG and it aint no huge *** bathroom tile like a 6P. The old N5 was one of the best phones....Ever.

Re: Why did you buy or why are you considering the 5X over the 6P?

I picked up a 5x, Black, 32GB.

If you underwhelmed by the new 5x, you should check out the 2014 Moto X. I think you can still get one on Moto Maker for around $300. I have one. It's a great device. That said, I couldn't resist returning to a Nexus device.

Gotcha, I'm with you. I don't really use the speaker much either.

Re: Why did you buy or why are you considering the 5X over the 6P?

The 5x is a phone for the masses. This is a phone for people like us to recommend to our family and friends who are not big into phones. For example, this is a perfect phone for my wife. It's easy for me to recommend it for her because I know the support that it will get. I could recommend this phone to my parents who are the definition of tech illiterate.

I actually don't agree with this. My GF is one of those people and she really didn't enjoy her Nexus 4 experience. Granted it was partly because of the battery life and reception. However, people like that really hate change usually. They could care less about having the latest and greatest OS they just want it to work and continue working how it has been. They also tend to like the extra ringtones and little added things that tech people generally hate. She is happily on an G2 now, and my mother is on a budget version of an S6 I think.

That being said I really wanted a 5X but am one of those people who has gotten used to wireless charging. So I figure if I'm not going to have that with either, the small price difference is worth the bump in specs. However, I really am in the crowd who likes phone around 5", so I haven't pulled the trigger at this point. I want to give Fi a try just for something new to play with, but neither is really calling out to me. At this point I'm telling myself that things like 240fps slowmo is a gimmick I won't use past the first couple times, and just having a speaker firing forward is better than having to cup your hand to get sound the right direction. I can live with the lesser specs these days, I don't care too much as long as it is a battery and camera improvement over the original 5. I just hope it doesn't take too long for a qi receiver with usb c on it to come out.

Re: Why did you buy or why are you considering the 5X over the 6P?

I am about to return my one plus two for nexus 5x. I love LG quality and from my understanding LG phones are all made in Korea. (Better quality) One plus two oxygen OS is bit buggy too and I want faster updates from Google. OPT has better spec 64gb, 4gb ram, 810 snap dragon. No tax. $389 + $13 shipping. OPT obviously has better spec but way they're handling the updates kind of worries me.

Re: Why did you buy or why are you considering the 5X over the 6P?

I'm choosing the N5x out of convenience not because it's exceptional. I've had a google fi invite sitting in my inbox since July and I've wanted to switch for months. The N6 is too large as is the N6p. I don't really see that much value in the 5x over my N5 except that it's still a reasonable size and I can use it on Project Fi.

Re: Why did you buy or why are you considering the 5X over the 6P?

My plan was always to buy the 5X due to size and I did just that however after seeing more and more ways the 6P is superior in other regards (screen, build quality, speakers, RAM, battery, etc..) I decided to order one as well so I could compare in hand. It certainly didn't hurt that all of that was only $70 more than the 5X (sadly another sign of how overpriced the 5X is compared to the 6P in the US).

I don't all of a sudden think it will be comfortable in my small hands but I decided it was at least worth a shot, at least it's nowhere near as massive as the Nexus 6 from last year which I tried to like but simply couldn't use it comfortably. Easy enough to return or sell whichever one I decide not to keep.

5x / 6p - Torn... And how to finangle my way into one.

So there's no doubting that both new Nexi look like they are going to be fantastic phones. My problem is neither one is the perfect phone for me.

Yes... I know. There is no such thing as the perfect phone. I'm willing to make sacrifices here but my problem is I dont know what sacrifices I should make.

For reference, I am coming from an HTC One M8.

Both phones will have Vanilla Android and fast updates (god how i've missed this) and I'm assuming the custom ROM support is going to be stellar, as has been with all other Nexus phones.

So, what do I like about the 6p? I love that it's chassis is aluminum. Huge Battery, some additional camera features that are lacking on the 5x (slow motion capture at 240fps?) more and faster RAM, Faster processor. DUAL Front facing speakers (and as I have been spoiled by the M8, this is a HUGE one)
BUT... I have never been much of a Phablet guy. Adjusting to the bigger phone would be difficult. In the summer I regularly cycle and i feel like a phone that big would be just too cumbersome, even in a jersey pocket, much less on day to day use. If i didnt use a case it really wouldnt be much more bulk than my current phone but I always use a case. Maybe a slim case would help with that. On another note, the AMOLED screen doesn't really do it for me. While I could deal with it and this isn't so much of a negative as the size is, my previous Galaxy Nexus was my last experience with an AMOLED screen and that phone suffered from some slight burn-in. I'd rather not have to deal with that.

What do I like about the 5x? It has practically the same form factor as my current M8. The size is a sweet spot that I have grown fond of. The specs are sub-par compared to the 6p but seem completely reasonable for the smaller battery and lower resolution screen. The screen is not AMOLED, it is LCD and to me this is a positive (see my 6p rant above).
BUT... a single front facing speaker. Don't get me wrong, I know that headphones pretty much trump speakers on a phone in just about every scenario. But the M8 has really, really spoiled me. I do a lot of media viewing/listening with my phone and there are times, especially laying in bed, I just dont want to have to dig for headphones to enjoy a show on netflix or Sling. The M8's speakers are so perfect for these times. I don't think the 6p's speakers could even compare with what HTC has done, but to even go less quality by dropping to a single speaker on the 5x has me really wondering if it would be right for me.

Re: 5x / 6p - Torn... And how to finangle my way into one.

The only comment I have ... is that when I went from a 4.7" to a 5.2" device and then from a 5.2" to a 5.96" device, both times it took less than a day for the new one to feel "normal" and less than a week for the old one to feel "small".

I'm kind of in the same situation. I have both pre-ordered but will only keep one. I love the size of the 5x over the 6p. I loved the original N5. Everything about it. But then again, I'm a geek. And I love the biggest, bestest, and newest. I think about the 6p only being $70 more than the 5x and I lean towards the 6p. Then, I remember how huge it is an I lean towards the 5x.

My advice to you is to just pick one and stick with it and don't have a second thought about the other one. Never go to the forum for the other one you didn't choose and don't read news on the one you didn't choose. That's the only way to do it, otherwise you will always want the one you don't have.

So which one should you choose? As of 12:25 PM on 9/30/15 I am choosing the 5x. The determining factors for me are:

1. Size - I love the size. 5.2" is a great size.

2. Feel - I heard the 5x has the same feel as the 5. The actual physical feel of the soft back and the overall "feel" of the device. Light, easy to hold, yet sturdy.

3. Camera - It has the same sensor as the 5p in a size I prefer. It does not have slo-mo or burst but these are nice to haves, not must haves for me.

4. Notification LED - When I heard the rumor that the 6p had it and the 5x didn't I was leaning 6p, but now that I know the 5x has it, bonus points. Yes I know both have it so it's not really why I chose the 5x but the fact that it wasn't left off helped further sway me to the 5x.

5. LG - I've had the Nexus 4, Nexus 5, and LG G4 and these were 3 of my favorite phones of all time. I like and trust LG.

Pretend you have pre-orders for both and Google called you and said you had to cancel one. Play out the scenarios for canceling each in your head. Would would make you sad? For me I'd be really sad to have to cancel the 5x. The 6p is a beast and nice but isn't the perfect beast for me.

Ok, I've talked long enough. Hope that helps!

Re: 5x / 6p - Torn... And how to finangle my way into one.

@Poseign...Aside from cycling (I'm a lazy slob), I share pretty much every single one of your concerns. And I'm coming from an M7.

If it weren't for the Project Fi exclusivity with Nexus phones, which I really want to try out, I would probably hold off and go with a Nextbit Robin.

I'm much the same, very much so a geek. The 6p screams flagship and the geek inside me is lusting for that. The realist is saying the 5x is going to be easier to manage.

Either way I am refraining from pre-ordering. The 50 dollar play store credit is nice but I think this time around it might be best to let others go through the growing pains, mainly because my current device is company owned and i normally get my new devices through them. I may have to use my upgrade in december on an iphone and quick flip it to pay for the Nexus (benefit of being IT, I can do whatever I want :)

Re: Why did you buy or why are you considering the 5X over the 6P?

Thanks for the good words and detailed reply. The 6p is not an option, it's too big and too heavy. So the 5x is looking good.

I must say though, the Nexbit Robin sure looks interesting :-}

There is a tipping point tho, for one handed operation and what fits in those smaller pockets.

I did the exact same thing. I have the Nexus 6 and though I have adapted to the size, I still prefer a smaller phone. So I pre-ordered the Nexus 5X on that reason alone.

Like you, after doing some more reading, it seems the 6P is the better overall phone, and initial hands-ons are saying it feels better to hold than the Nexus 6. So I also pre-ordered the 6X to compare the two and see which I like better.
