Chosing LG V30 over Note 8

Reasons I avoided the S8, S8+ and Note 8.

1) aspect ratio - Samsung is using an 18.5 x 9 ratio which to me just looks too tall and skinny.
2) fingerprint sensor location - What were they thinking?
3) curved edge screen - Grew to hate the curved edges on the S7 Edge which the V30 has replaced.

This is my first Lg phone. I was worried after the G4 debacle, but the 2 year warranty put my mind at ease. So far I'm really loving the battery life, and the size is really perfect. Also, the $200 visa card I got from LG reducing the price to $640 helped too.

Perfectly summarized. The curves are just a pain in the you know what. The Note 8 and S8+ are just too darn tall and narrow, it really doesn't feel like a 6.2 inch but more like a 5.5 inch.

LG had me with the V10, the combination of replaceable batteries, sd card slot, dac, and durability lured me in and ultimately was very happy with it. Unfortunately, I was hit with the dreaded boot loop and had to exchange my phone 3 times.
What really bothered me about the boot loop was not the fact that I had to go with out the phone for weeks at a time , which consequently got me in the habit of always having a back up phone, but the fact that LG was still selling a known defective product. Every time I would take my phone back T-Mobile I would see the v10 still being sold, instead of being recalled like Samsung did with the note 7. To make matter even worse, LG did not even try to placate affected V10 owners with a discounted upgrade to the V20 but chooses instead to hype their 2 year warranties.
In my opinion it was LG handling of the boot loop issue, which also affected the G series of phones, that really tank LG reputation. Once that goes, no amount of features, increase in advertising budget, or positive reviews can change that. Especially in an already tight android market.

Precisely. My V10 bricked, G4 bricked.. I was going to get V20 or V30 but am scared of ending up with another pretty, shiny brick. I fear V30 is potentially the same thing in a newer packaging. It's too new to tell for sure.

I've been using the Note 8 since it came out and the V30 also since then. I've ultimately gone back and forth a lot, but have decided to stick to the V30. Primary reasons:

1. DAC
2. Battery life in my case is way better with the V30, particularly standby time. Maybe that's a 7.1.2 vs. 7.1.1 issue? Maybe it's the smaller screen, though I use the V30 in UHQ resolution all the time and get better battery life than the note on regular HAD.
3. Size, and ease of use because of the size.
4. Fingerprint reader.
5. Wide angle camera vs. 2X zoom camera.
6. Video camera

I find the screen on my V30 to be very very close to the Note 8. I can barely tell them apart other than default brightness being lower on the V30 and outdoor max brightness also being lower. I do use vibrant color mode.

To me, having Tidal connected directly to my car aux from the V30 is so amazing, and impacts my life positively, that the DAC alone is reason enough. The big difference between the V30 DAC and the V30/G6 is that the DAC in the V30 doesn't eat up battery like there's no tomorrow while the latter 2 phones did when I used the HiFi on setting. Awesome phone, and while not perfect, I consider the V30 the best phone of 2017.

Full disclosure folks, after several weeks of various issues, from frequent crashes of random apps, to Bluetooth issues, I sold the V30. I'm now choosing between the Note 8 and Pixel XL 2. If the V30 didn't have all those issues, it would be my current phone.

I've been having the itch to get the Note 8, since I'm on the JUMP Plan but the only reason I hold back is because of the V30's wide angel camera, which I love. Should be a must in all phones.

Also, I hate the FPS on the NOTE 8 and I feel it's too long, heavy and thin, I know I would want to go back to the V30 within a week.

Yeah, that's a tough one. For me, the Note 8 is a little too large. I can adjust to the FP sensor's awkward location. I also use the iris scanner more. If we disregard the issues with each phone (display on the Pixel and some battery issues on the Note8), I would go with the Pixel XL 2. As we should consider each phone AS IS, the Note8 is the safer bet and a fantastic phone.

This is sad, but one of the main reasons I go with Samsung, no weird issues. My Note8 has been a workhorse since Day 1, no freezing or rebooting and it continues to multitasking like a champ.

Sorry to hear about your V30, are you sure you do not have a defective unit or is this a general V30 issue?

I'm not sure. I saw enough similar complaints from others about similar issues to try the warranty claim. But I'm a phone switcher in general. Don't go by my experiences.

Similar story here: V30+ #1 had a bad connection in the headphone jack (Quad DAC HiFi in mono), while #2 didn't even get unwrapped as it had several lines of dead pixels running down the screen. I'm returning #3 today as it has developed a thin grey line straight down the centre of the screen. Apparently this particular fault is quite common. I still haven't decided if I should try a #4 , or accept that LG has really poor build quality & buy a Samsung instead. I really like everything about the V30 - especially the DAC, but this seems like an expensive gamble

That's too bad. Nothing comes close to that DAC. That's one thing I'm really missing.

...and just like that, now the headphone jack has lost the RH channel on phone#3 too. This store must have received a bad batch as I don't see this being a common issue (yet). I think I'll be headed over to Samsung after all.

I think a lot of what's wrong over at LG's Mobile section is poor advertising, they made a phone last year that didn't sell very well, the G5. And personally I think it's because Samsung is the Apple of Android. So many people do not even understand what kind of software their Samsung phone is running, here is a perfect example of that: My sister in law came over to stay a week with my wife after having surgery, she tells me she has to run to the AT&T store because she forgot her charger at home, her phone is just a Samsung S7, nothing special about the charger or micro USB cable, so I told her I have like 3 chargers and cables laying around here she could use, her reply was " oh I can't use any of those because this is a Samsung phone, and your phone isn't a Samsung phone. After trying to explain it to her, I gave up and told her where the AT&T store was so she could buy a Samsung charger. This is a problem not only for LG but any Android manufacturer that isn't Samsung.

That's not a Marketing issue. It's an issue with your average customer being too dumb to pay attention to things.
