Chromecast on multiple wifi networks

Does anybody know what happens when you take one of these to a different Wi-Fi network? I'm assuming you have to set it up with that network just like you did before but do you have to reset it first or will it remember both networks?

I'm going to take this to my father's house to watch some Netflix there and it would kind of stink if I had to reset it first, go through this set up at his house, then when I get back home have to set it up again at my house, then go through the whole thing again next time I bring it to my father's house. Or is it like a smartphone or tablet where once you do it once it remembers in the future?

I've not tried it with mine, but my guess is that it will remember.

Try changing your home network's name (with the device unplugged). See what happens and report back.

If it's a different network, you'll have to set it up again. When you first turn it on, it becomes an access point that the Chromecast app sees and connects to. Then you assign it to a WiFi network. If you move it, you'll have to set it up on a new network. I think the logic is that at $35, buy one for each location and leave it set up.

So if I use it at two different locations throughout the month I have to set it up each and every time I use it at each location? Or once the setup is done once at each location it never has to be done again at those locations? I'm going to take it somewhere this weekend so I guess I'll find out when I bring it back home and try to use it again where I've already set it up once.

If you're going to a hotel it won't work (I was hoping it would). According to Google if the wifi requires an authorization screen Chromecast won't work. Disappointing but I can understand.

I was hoping to use it in this manner as well. However, as you noted, it doesn't work. Just tried. "Chromecast connect to Guest, but can't access the internet". Darn. Feature request.

Okay I finally have the answer. I'm surprised nobody has answered this question yet but here it is. It does remember Wi-Fi networks but you still have to go through part of the set up process each time you move it to another Wi-Fi network. When I got home from visiting my father's house I plugged it back in and it said something along the lines of "can't find Wi-Fi network <name of my Dad's network>". So I opened up the web-based setup application on my iPhone and started going through the process again of setting it up except this time I did not have to type in the password for my Wi-Fi network again. It simply said "<name of my network> (saved)" with the password field grayed out. I did have to do that step where you briefly switch to the Chromecast as your Wi-Fi network and then back to your Wi-Fi network but that's pretty much it.

So while it doesn't just instantly work like moving a smartphone from one Wi-Fi network to another reestablishing the Chromcast on networks it's already been set up on just takes a few simple taps in the setup application to get going again. That's easy enough for me. Now if they would just come out with a native IOS setup application that would be great.

I used mine last night for a neighborhood HOA meeting to show documents ("entire screen" cast) on the large screen tv at the neighborhood clubhouse, and it worked great on the clubhouse wifi network. Once I returned home I plugged it back in and opened the setup app on my laptop, it remembered my home wifi password, I just had to click on the "get password" button. I suppose it's the app that's remembering the password, not the Chromecast dongle.

I'm not having any luck getting mine to work after setting it up on another wifi network out of the box. The initial set up was a breeze and it worked perfectly. Now when I try to set it up at my home, it says that there is a communication error and my phone and Chromecast may be on two different networks that can't communicate. It gives me a link to a help page to disable AP Isolation. I checked my router settings and AP Isolation is already disabled.

Here's the thing that confuses me: the house where I set it up originally has the exact same router (Cisco Valet) and TV (Sony) that I have. I can't think of anything that would be different. When I first plug it in at my house, it looks for the original wifi signal. Upon not finding it, it tells me to go through the set up. I can see the Chromecast wifi signal and it appears to connect just fine to my wifi connection. Does anyone have any suggestions? It's so frustrating since it seems like it should work just as it did the first time.

Right now there is no way to lock Chromecast down so if you set it up at a hotel anybody else on the network can see it and cast to it.

Which could lead to some great shenanigans.

Even if you have the same router, same TV, same laptop, same SSID, you still will need to run Chromecast Setup again at your house. If setup doesn't work, I would try to change the SSID on your router, reboot it, and try again.

Just wanted to report that I was able to fix my problem and set up my CC on my home network! After trying multiple fixes including hard reset, changing settings on my router, etc., I found that my router had a software update available. I downloaded and installed it and voila! My CC set up went just fine. If anyone is still having issues, perhaps check for new versions of software. My router is about 4-5 years old.

Most hotels use some form of client isolation so even if the CC can connect to the internet your laptop/device on the same WiFi network won't be able to see your CC.

to reset the network to allow use on chromecast, leave device plugged in and hit the little botton a couple of times until chromecast screen on tv says resetting to factory setting.. looked everywhere online couldnt find the answer.. used logic of resetting the computer thats runs my car....and it worked..

To bypass authorization screen could you login to the public network with another device (ex. Note 10.1) and from the other device use wifi direct to bridge the Chromecast?

ex. Hotel network > GNote 10.1 > Chromecast via wifi direct
