"City ID" Crapware!

There is no 35$ charge just the monthly 2$ fee that appears on your phone bill just like a ringback charge. I don't see the big its a nice app and don't have have a problem with it
Is the $35.00 charged to your wireless bill or does it prompt you to enter a credit card number? & are we certain it's $35.00 for the application? That's awfully a lot of money....

My pop-up finally happened today. I told it no thanks. Dang thought I had it working for free lol.

Does anyone know if its legal for Verizon to put City ID on the droid Incredible, which is collection my data without my permission.

I called up Verizon support twice and they told me it CANNOT be removed, i will have the option to do so 30days after the trial is expired, so i'm getting spamed for the next 30days.

Maybe a class action lawsuit is what it will take to get this spam ware off my phone.

my 2 cents.
I don't think this is an HTC thing, City ID was a free program to download and use, then this company made the same program and name with fees and sold it to Verizon to sucker money from customers.
My wifes Samsung and other Verizon phones have this crapware.
This is a Verizon thing, not HTC and the worse thing is that it always runs, if it's not being used why does it have to run.
This is the best reason for root to remove CityID

Lawsuit.....really dude? If you are that concerned with your privacy you really shouldn't be using a cellphone at all, because they all track you. IE cell tower triangulation, GPS, on and on. Especially with a Google phone, you don't think they track your search and web history?

Now if I bought a no-subsidized phone I would be hot having this extra crap on it, but on a subsidized phone, this is partly the reason they can do it so cheap with contracts with companies like this, I do think we should uninstallation rights to everything though. Just seems far.

City id is not free to dl anywhere. There have been companies that tried to clone it but got shut down. This cmpny licences there app and its up to who ever gets it to promote it to customers and sell it. Ie 30 day trial to promote it. Do not like it oh well get over.

you can still download the free clone "City Caller ID" if you look :P does exactly the same thing. just DON'T apply the update lol

Pro tip: Go into Settings > Applications > Manage Applications and delete CityID's data/cache. Reset the trial from 4 days to 15 days for me today. :D Could be a temporary fix.

Has anyone tried deleting it from the appbrain app? I saw an option for it today, but my free trial is still running, so I want to keep it for a while..

I found this on the verizon forum (Removing CityID adware on the Droid Incredible - Verizon | Forums and Blogs - Verizon Community)

Hello :

Thank you for your message. Because City ID is one of the preinstalled applications on the HTC Incredible, there are no install or uninstall options (as with all preinstalled applications on the Android OS).

At the end of the free trial (15 days after your 5th incoming call), a City ID screen will appear to inform you the trial has expired. This expiration screen will ask if you would like to subscribe to City ID with the options ?Yes,? ?No,? or ?Remind Me Later.? Selecting ?No? will disable City ID, the city and state of calls will no longer be displayed and no further City ID notifications will appear. (Note: When selecting ?Remind Me Later,? or pressing the Back or End key, the trial expired message will appear after each incoming call (up to 10 times) until you select the ?No? button. Be sure to select "No" to immediately disable City ID; otherwise, City ID will automatically disable itself after the 10th and final reminder.)

We hope City ID provides some benefit to you during the free trial even if you choose not to subscribe.

Best Regards,
The Cequint Team

This is exactly what happened to me. The trial lasted longer than 15 days though I don't know why. I selected No and haven't seen it since. It was interesting to have, but if its not going to show where the call is originating from, I don't need it. To know that a specific phone number is based out of a certain city is entertaining but not a necessity. When you think about it in that light, it really seems like a waste of an app.

Finally got the "Your trial period has ended" pop-up on City ID. Let's see what happens. I hope it just stays dead from now on.

I'm surprised the Incredible hasn't been rooted yet so that I can remove this thing once and for all. Has it always taken this long to root a new phone? The HTC Incredible is my first Android.

I got it yesterday.
Just chose NO, and hopefully that's the end of it. It's really bothering me that it's still on there though.

The thing that really gets me about this app is that City ID charges a monthly fee for it. Are you kidding me?! I would probably bite if it was just a simple one-time cost for the app just because of how nicely it is integrated with Sense, but a monthly fee (especially one of $2.99!!!) just seems ludicrous. It's only a simple database lookup table. It requires virtually no monthly upkeep.

It's so stupid. Like tpc says, it shows where the cell is based out of - not where person is calling from. We pay $2.99 a month for that??

I really do hate this app. I hope once the Incredible is rooted we can remove the crappy excuse of an app.

Removed app after rooting the device. Personally, never bothered me, never saw a prompt.

# rm /system/app/CityID.apk

Bye bye...gone...

if you want to you can try rooting your phone, and use Titanium Backup to uninstall after you are rooted, any bloatware, but, be cautious, I have only ever tested this on my own phone, Galaxy Note i717, once with Android 4.0.4, and again with Android 4.1.2, even though it works for mine perfectly, it may not work on other phones, what I mean is that it could possibly stop your phone from working the way its supposed to, the best way to find out is YouTube and Google, no your model number and android version, and search up anything you need to know about it, there may also be people in your area who are very good at doing this and will do it for you for a fee. trust me it's worth it, I saved over 300 megabytes of memory on my phone by getting rid of bloatware, and my battery life got a lot better afterwards. sorry I couldn't help with your led problem on htc, I have a problem with HTC, I can't stand them, never had one, don't want one.

I've found 2 negatives to the dozens and dozens of positives with this phone right now. One is design-based, the other is software. Neither are showstoppers, but one is a pain in the **** for certain.

Number One: The notification LED on the front of the phone is both tiny and difficult to see. Poor design on the part of HTC with that one... I'd have preferred something far more noticeable so that I notice my notifications. (See! You noticed that!)

Number Two: "City ID"

W-T-F. Granted, it's software and I am sure someone somewhere will figure out how to get rid of it, but FOR CHRISTS SAKE - I FEEL LIKE I AM USING SOME NAGGING SHAREWARE whenever I am done with a call. (I guess that's because I am, much to my chagrin) NO, I do NOT want to subscribe to your &@^!, and to be honest, NO, I do NOT want to continue using a trial. I just want to get rid of the software. Make - it - go - away.

If anyone experiments with an uninstallation application that can kill this off, I'd appreciate to hear your results.

-Greg, a new Incredible owner.
