"City ID" Crapware!

Finally got the "Your trial period has ended" pop-up on City ID. Let's see what happens. I hope it just stays dead from now on.

I'm surprised the Incredible hasn't been rooted yet so that I can remove this thing once and for all. Has it always taken this long to root a new phone? The HTC Incredible is my first Android.

Eh things are quite a bit different with this version on sense, from all reports they have removed a lot of the stock android interface which could be causing some different challenges for the people who know what they are doing with the roms, they could have even introduced a different scheme on how to do it with this version of sense ui and android mixed.

Keep up updated on the pop-ups because I should be coming up on my 14 days trial ending any minute now!

Yeah I'm in the same boat. It's a pretty neat little feature I would like to have but I'm not paying monthly for it. That's one of those things they should include inside android I think.

would be nice if the app actually said where the call is originating from instead of where the service was activated.
For instance if I was in CA and made a call it would still say Allentown, PA.

I think it only reads their number and does an area code look up right? I say this because landlines don't have GPS ;) Not really sure how it does the number lookup, but I'm sure it's not 100% accurate.

That is correct. There is an app in the market called "Area Code ID" for .99 I might try. Nice thing about the market is you can always return it within 24 hours for a full refund.

Interesting, I may check it out too Cory. I've already bought two apps from the market Touiteur and DoggCatcher. Haven't regretted either purchase yet, may need to go for a three-pete!

The only thing that's stopped me, is that the app I mention above messes with the built in phone screen app and that kind of stuff makes me nervous. But I will still give it a shot probably.

I have no idea about whether this is embedded in Sense or not, but I had an LG env 1, 2, 3, and Voyager and I think 3 if not all 4 of them came with city id on them.

It was very aggravating and it was almost the same experience you guys are describing in the beginning and after the trial I never heard from the app again. I believe I even deleted it from the Voyager after the trial. Now obviously these are all dumbphones so its not exactly the same thing, but I wouldn't stress about it too much as you will probably forget it was even ever there after a while.

The only reason you may still even see the app anywhere is because to my knowledge Android doesn't let you hide apps like BB does so maybe it'll be in the app drawer forever which would suck, but probably very low on the priority list of complaints

To me its no more annoying than VZW navigAtor and music Id and the other stuff that comes on all the other phones. Do wish you could at least hide it like on bb.

City ID still shows up on my Task Killer every time I reboot the phone. No more pop-ups (yet).

I tried something interesting with City ID. I disabled the function to obtain the time from the network and manually set the date past the trial period. When I opened City ID it presented me with a trial period has expired, asking if I wanted to pay the monthly fee Yes/No, I selected No.

I then navigated to Applications settings for City ID; cleared the Data and Force Closed. I backed out and then powered off the phone. Upon powering it on I changed the setting back so time/date is obtained from the network. When I opened City ID again, I tried to check my subscription status, it states that I am trying to request a trial, but is waiting on a response from the server.

It has been stuck in that status for several hours now with no change. It still currently gives me the City/State of callers. If it is never able to connect to the server to request that trial it could potentially be working at no cost.

I've done nothing with CityId since accepting the trial. I just got a call today, and it showed the city/state as it always has. No nag screen, no nothing. Considering I only accepted the free trial, I assumed that after 15 days it would ask if I wanted to buy it, etc.

Its the 19th. I got my phone on the 29th. Thats well past the trial, so I have to wonder...why does mine still work? Why haven't I got any nag screens?

My free trial should have been up the 17th and I'm still getting the functions of it without any nag screens. Would be nice to have it for free ;)

iv had it sense the 30th. i havent seen screen pop up asking me to activate it. or that my trial has ran out. i hope i dont get a bill next month.

yeah but you can delete it from the enV's.
They just don't tell you it's 35.00 for the app and then 2.00 a month......

Is the $35.00 charged to your wireless bill or does it prompt you to enter a credit card number? & are we certain it's $35.00 for the application? That's awfully a lot of money....

I don't know if it will start back up.

Settings/Apps/Manage Apps/City ID /Stop

But yeah, I'm irked it won't go away either!

IT will stop it till the phone reboots (or something else calls it up, maybe the dialar I don't know) then the daemon (Linux term for a process) will start again.e

I found this on the verizon forum (Removing CityID adware on the Droid Incredible - Verizon | Forums and Blogs - Verizon Community)

Hello :

Thank you for your message. Because City ID is one of the preinstalled applications on the HTC Incredible, there are no install or uninstall options (as with all preinstalled applications on the Android OS).

At the end of the free trial (15 days after your 5th incoming call), a City ID screen will appear to inform you the trial has expired. This expiration screen will ask if you would like to subscribe to City ID with the options ?Yes,? ?No,? or ?Remind Me Later.? Selecting ?No? will disable City ID, the city and state of calls will no longer be displayed and no further City ID notifications will appear. (Note: When selecting ?Remind Me Later,? or pressing the Back or End key, the trial expired message will appear after each incoming call (up to 10 times) until you select the ?No? button. Be sure to select "No" to immediately disable City ID; otherwise, City ID will automatically disable itself after the 10th and final reminder.)

We hope City ID provides some benefit to you during the free trial even if you choose not to subscribe.

Best Regards,
The Cequint Team
