Cleaning up your device data/storage

Now that we have all had this device and loaded, unloaded, reloaded.....apps and data, etc. Are there any good "house cleaning" tips anyone has for keeping the X running smooth and efficient.

What tips and tricks have you tried successfully?

power off the phone
hold the home key while pressing and holding the power button
when you see an orange triangle with an adroid press the search key
use the volume rocker to scroll down to wipe cache
use the menu key to choose ok

This doesn't seem to work for the Moto Droid. Any ideas on how to accomplish the same thing?

I am trying to figure out the same thing for my wifes droid. I dgreatis on my droid x and it worked great!

is this the same as a system reset or will all my installed apps and settings remain unchanged? Also will i lose root?
