Clearing cache and data?

Can somebody explain why this works I most cases. I see it stated in the forums and yes it does work but I don't understand why.

Clearing cache removes temp files and clearing data basically resets the app to how it was in the beginning Android 201: How (and when) to clear app cache or data | Android Central

I got into a habit of clearing it don't know why.

It's basically restoring it right?

If the clear is done in recovery, it is a reformat. I do that once a month.

Thanks all. The Android 201 link was a great help. I had problems with stock message app and clearing cach e and data restored it. I guess it's a bit of magic.

You could say that, but you could also say it's the wonders of Android and the level of control it gives you over your device.
