Clearing Google Maps data and cache

At first I was trying to figure out why Google maps "unfortunately stopped working" on my VZW Droid Maxx. It only happened when the distance was short enough to walk so in the results instead of a car it was a pedestrian walking. It "unfortunately stopped working" every time my destination was in walking distance. I solved that by disabling Google Now. Now even if its right down the block, it shows a car and grudgingly gives up the nav directions. Before I solved that, i started by clearing the cache/clearing the the data in maps. But when I restarted maps all the history was still there to choose from, as it is now, every place I ever searched for comes right up. Not that Im terribly concerned (actually it can be quite helpful) but Im just wondering why its all still there after clearing the data and cache.

I think Google Now took away the ability to talk text. But still no microphone after turning it off. Dont know if I should post that as a separate issue or not.

Your history is backed up in Google's servers, not in the app's data. When you clear data and cache, all offline data goes away, but when you fire up the app again, all your history and preferences come back rushing in after the account is recognized. If you want to clear that, you need to go to your Google Dashboard on a web browser, I believe.
