You may not be able to do this with the stock clipboard. However, you can download a third-party keyboard from the play store and have more functionality with the items you are clipping/copying.

You should be able to highlight or long oress what you want to copy to the clipboard and a menu will pop up asking to copy to clipboard.

It should stay on clipboard until you manually delete it. I delete it by going into messages and selecting the tools button and then clipboard... from there you can delete all.
