So this whole time I've been using dk28, so i figured i would switch to eb13 since it is the newer froyo build. Anyways, after i performed the procedure, my version of clockworkmod is now 2.5.1.0. I then boot into recovery and press "apply sdcard update" and it goes back to 3.0.2.4 (my original version) but then when i reboot and then return to cwm, it goes back to 2.5.1? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like your using ROM Manager. Stay away from ROM Manager, its broken for the Epic 4g.

If your running EB13 the only proper way to root your device is by using the procedure in the following link/thread.

[Root] Samsung Epic 4G Official Froyo EB13 w/Optional EXT4

I would suggest you uninstall ROM Manager and consider using Odin to return to a fresh start with Froyo EB13 and use the above thread//link to root your device.
Procedure #1 will give you a fresh start with Froyo EB13
[How to] Factory Restore (or Fix a Bricked Phone)

Hope this helps, again please stay away from ROM Manager, it doesn't work properly with the Epic 4g and will only cause you headaches.

Thanks for the input! I guess I'll stay away from rom manager for now. What i ended up doing was return to stock, upgraded to ec05 froyo, and then rooted from there. All is well now :D

Good deal.. That is the only way you should be rooting (the links I provided) until you hear differently.

Another question about clockwork: does it restore the previous prl as well?
Yes I would like to think so... Only part I believe a Nandroid backup doesn't save is the kernel. I maybe wrong, but I do know the kernel is one thing that is NOT included in backup/restores.
