Easy? No unfortunately. It's still possible, so maybe someone will break it down for you when they've done it.. Koush released a utility called bmunlock this morning which allows us to flash a kernel from the shell, using 'dd'.

So everything would be the same, except using odin, you would shell into the device and run the bmunlock, then the dd command to flash the kernel partition.

Anyone care to take a stab at a mac tutorial of the bmunlock? Us mac users are dead in the water until then... lol

I do it from the clockworkmod recovery.. the green text, not from the phone OS. Installing update.zip allows you to select a different update.zip than what's used by default. It doesn't have anything to do with nandroid or making a backup.

Yes I am a Android Newbie..

Ok I just want to make sure I do this correctly or if I am doing this wrong (which is probably the case)..

In the instructions it says to hold down the volume key to get it into recovery mode? Then proceed with the instructions. I do this just fine but odin does not detect my phone? When I am NOT in recovery mode I get the yellow bar, is that correct? Is that when I am suppose to add the .tar file?

Again, just want to make sure I am understanding this correctly?

No no no..

This is a bit more laborious, but it'll be easier on you.

1 - Make sure you have installed those samsung drivers on your PC!
2 - Turn phone off, remove battery. Leave battery out.
3 - plug in USB cable, hold volume down.

When you see the yellow triangle, that is download mode. Download mode is not recovery mode, keep that in mind. Download mode (yellow triangle) is when you use odin. You should see one of the boxes turn yellow after opening odin and having your phone in download mode. The yellow box in odin means your phone is detected.

Then select the .tar file into the PDA box (NOT PHONE. NEVER USE THE PHONE BOX!!!), and hit start. It will apply, then reset the phone. You need to disconnect the cable, put the battery back in and power up.

Your clockworkmod recovery kernel has been applied. Follow the rest of the steps.

Yeah I had all the current files the missing piece for me was removing the battery. After that it was no problem.. At least I think I did it correctly..

so i uninstalled lagfix, installed the drivers, etc.

I took out the battery, held down the down-volume key and plugged it into the usb. I got the yellow triangle on the screen ("downloading... do not turn off target!!!).

Odin3 shows one yellow box (0:[COM7]). I selected PDA and loaded the .tar file. It started up, but then I get a message from windows saying that Odin3 Communicator has stopped working, and says I should close the program.

I'm not sure what is going on, any help would be great.

The last message I get on odin3 is "File analysis.."

The .tar file looked like something I would unpack, but winrar wouldn't unpack it, so i didn't.

For those of you Mac users who are wondering, you cannot use Parallels or VMWare Fusion to run Odin. It won't recognize the phone in download mode. This is documented elsewhere online. Your only choice is to hit up a PC user to do the steps described - which worked well BTW!

OK! Noob here. I must have beginner's luck. Rooted and now ClockworkMOD recovery done on first try after hours of reading first.
My question I followed instructions after sd was mounted and data was written. I downloaded Clockworkmod recovery app and then selected backup current ROM(is this the same as nandroid backup??) and created Recovery 2.5.1.0. Am I on the right track here? Did I laave anything out and what should I do next if anything?

- There have been reports of lagfix making nandroid run extremely slow. We have seen on entire system crash due to lagfix + CWM. Removing lagfix first is HIGHLY recommended.

Can I reinstall the lagfix after I install CWM?

Newb here as well. I went through the steps here and was successful on my first attempt. I was already rooted with lagfix, removed lagfix, applied SW update, re-rooted, installed CWM. From what I gather this allows you to create backup of your entire system so that you have a good copy to revert to in case of system failure, etc.

I suppose I'm being a bit ignorant in that I don't fully understand what I'm doing before applying these changes that I've made. Does this, in effect, do the same or better as Titanium Backup, or am I off base? So the ROM manager along with CWM will allow custom ROMs to be flashed when available?

Hopefully the super helpful guys around here will put together a newbie primer/definitions/uses of each of these softwares/patches/exploits/whathaveyou.

CW creates a snapshot of your system as it was whenever you backed it up, meaning once you restore from CW, everything goes back to exactly as it was.

This is similar to system restore in Windows.

Titanium backup backs up files and apps, but only system DATA; I learned this when I tried to restore system files I had renamed, and then later deleted, only to find out that titanium could not restore those files.

I ended up using CW to restore me to before I had deleted those system files, and there they were, sitting renamed as they were before I deleted.

DO NOT DELETE FILES UNLESS YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU'RE DOING.

Also, I'm beginning to understand that for some people like myself, it's better to give the guys over at XDA -and the more in the know users here- a few days to iron things out before you try and modify your phone.

It saves us the trouble of screwed up phones, and them the trouble of having to give us step by step directions on how to un-screw our phones.
