Clockworkmod Recovery

Yes, you can install the lag-fix after CWM.

However, the lag-fix is easily the #1 reason people have blown up their phones.

If you really need the lag-fix, go ahead. Just make sure you know how to uninstall it.

I don't use it.. From what I know, Cory doesn't use it.. None of the other dev's I work with use it. For 95% of the people, this "fix" isn't going to do much, if anything.. If you're the 5% that needs it, then you need to know what it does, how it works, and how to remove it. Otherwise it's going to cause you nothing but problems.

I haven't had any problems with the lagfix since it was first posted. I realize that there are a lot of Android users that don't completely understand what they're doing with these mods, but I do. Don't let a post count fool you. ;-)

My SF is primarily rooted so I could rename Verizon's bloated APK's. I think I'll just hold off on CWM and until we get some Froyo love.

That was just a general statement, not for you specifically. :) The lag-fix works just fine 99.9% of the time.

The issue at hand is if it's even necessary. The lag-fix was posted before there was even a complaint of lag. It was just assumed that since most Galaxy-S variants had a lag problem, so would we. So the lag-fix was copied over and posted.

Those of us who use our phones without the lag-fix rarely see any actual lag in the first place. It can, and has, gotten in the way of other (and, IMO) way more important changes, such as CWM. Other than the Quadrant score, there has been very little proven or documented benefit.

If people know what they're doing and want to use the lag-fix, go ahead. If you're a new user, and just want to use it because "everyone else is" and it sounds cool, do yourself a big favor, and don't use it.

I just removed lagfix and noticed that the only thing it slowed in Quadrant was the I/O steps - most notably database writes. Everything else is normal like it was w/ the fix. So I see what you mean that it's not really needed.

and how are you trying to get into recovery? give us some details man. :)

i got it working.. then i'm not sure what i did.. but i was getting the never ending sorry pop ups.. like this

then i got it working again.. i was up until like 3am messing with this phone.. had to be up at 5.. smh..

indeed it was.. but the one click root isnt working for me now.. so i dunno.. maybe i'll just leave it as it is..

Rooted and installed Clockwork Recovery...removed bloatware, remove bing, install google...

what next? Wait for custom ROM?

Ok re-rooted my phone and installed the CWR using odin without a hitch. Thanks to all for the help and info.

But I have a question on what happens if I brick my phone and I cannot get to the rom manager app to reflash my backup? Is there a way to do it with the phones recovery menu without using CWR menu?

Thanks

ok i get to

step 5 - reboot into recovery via ROM Manager (don't manually reboot,

choose the option in ROM Manager)

when it reboots it starts to load into update package and then i get

e:failed to verify whole-file signature
e:signature verification failed
installation aborted

im not sure what i did or how to get this working and i cant find any forums with my problem ether any ideas? i just want to make a backup in case i brick it again

Yes.
You hold down both volume keys and the power button when turning the phone on. The stock recovery will appear and u select "apply update.zip"
You should now be in CWR ; )

There is a place where you get an option to name the .tar file. Is this necessary, or do we just hit start without renaming? CWM screwed me up once, I want to be sure this time. Thanks.

Got CWM on my phone. Process is acurate but for some reason had some issues with Odin. At first it failed to try to communicate with my phone. Then when it did find the port it failed part way through the update. Was scared that I bricked the phone because the screen went black and had to pull the battery and afterwards it did not boot, stuck at a screen that showed a phone connected to a pc. After a few tries Odin finally was able to update the phone and everything is good. Not sure what was the issue but I assume it was something on my PC causing the initial problem.

I'm having issues just getting my phone recognized by Win7 when in downloading... mode. I tried both sets of drivers but it refuses to recognize the hardware when I plug it in. I don't have this problem when powered up normally. Any suggestions?

Edit: Never mind, I found the post where you told us to remove the battery if necessary and it worked. I'm currently making a backup. Which is cool, should anything happen from here on out.

I'm an android newbie, so this is all very new and not exactly straightforward. From here, where do I go? I mean, I've got my insurance policy and I hear new ROM's are being worked on. Should I try out Voodoo?

NOt a real issue but does anyone have the Android central widget installed? I have been getting Force closes on it since installing CWM. I uninstalled and re-installed but still get the same issue.

Can you run the Fix permissions in CWM?

Thanks

can't use odin

I am getting a little concerned about the fact that Odin will not recognize my phone. In DL mode windows says there is something wrong w/ the USB device.
Am I ever going to be able to flash recoveries and do backups etc. if I can't use odin? Didn't they get it so that the Vibrant could take the install of CWM w/out odin?
This doesn't seem like a very valid reason to get my phone swapped within my 30 days, at least I don't think it is...
thank you...
