clunky answering a call

Pixel 5. I got a call . The Answer thing appeared at the bottom. I stabbed the Answer option, and because I failed to swipe it it disappeared. The phone kept ringing. Then I could not find anything on the screen to say how to answer the call, and eventually they hung up. Luckily I had time to notice who the call was from so I rang them back. To ring them back I looked first in "Missed calls"and there was nothing there, so what is the good of that? I succeeded by going into my Contacts.

The whole system seems clunky. For starters I have found there are TWO ways to answer depending on whether the phone is locked or not. One answer method button appears at the bottom of the phone and requires a SWIPE. The other appears at the TOP and requires a touch not swipe. Why not only one way requiring only one way ? A swipe is not intuitive so if there is a very good reason for it, at least indicate it some way. Make the options to answer or hang up far apart so you can't accidently hit the wrong one.

I'm talking about a PHONE's fundamental use here, from a lay-user point of view after all, so please fix with that in mind.

As far as I can remember, the Answer button from the lockscreen has always been some form of swiping, because if it was a simple touch, that could easily lead to accidental answering (or hangups) due to inadvertent touches in a pocket or bag while the phone is ringing.
