So my college email is powered by gmail, but my address is still an @conncoll.edu address. When I got my hero, i SOMEHOW got the email to work normally on my phone. I was receiving/sending emails like normal on my phone with my college account, just like I could with my personal gmail account. Then (and this is another issue entirely) my hero turned off, then on and was reset to factory default. Everything was gone, don't know why this happened, the phone was just in my pocket when it happened. So obvs my email settings got deleted. Now when I try to set up my college email again it will not work! It says authentication failed, verify your user name and password and I know im putting them in right.

Im using the following settings, and IMAP is enabled on my college account.

Protocol: IMAP
Email Address: Johnsmith@conncoll.edu
Username: Johnsmith
Imap server: imap.gmail.com
Security:SSL
Port:993

Why is this not working!? I know its possible because it was working the entire year until my phone reset and now I cannot get it to work again. My Tech dept has no clue. Please help!

Well, I had trouble with IMAP based emails in the past, you should try and see if turning off SSL solves the problem. I have no idea why, but that's what my problem was. Now I know this might not be something you want, what with turning off secure connections...

On the other hand, your email should work with the native gmail client, if you're not using it for another original gmail account, or if you're running a custom 2.1 rom and you have the ability to use multiple gmail accounts. Just make sure to enter your full email address when you set up your account. I'd recommend this, it gives you a much better experience with gmail than IMAP.

As to your phone doing a full factory reset on it's own, I have no clue... I'll let someone more experienced offer some advice on that. Maybe you have more problems than your email misbehaving.

set up your college account just like any other gmail account.

1) Select the gmail icon in your menu or on one of your home screens
2) click the menu button
3) select accounts
4) Select add account
5) setup your college account the same you would any other gmail account.

If that didn't make any sense .... CLICK HERE

When I hit menu in my gmail app, it doesnt have an account option, only refresh, compose, view labels, search, and settings. The account option isnt in setting either.

You'll have to forgive me, I didn't consider you may be running Android 1.5 :D. I'm on 2.1 and the link i shared above is for 2.1 also.

In that case CLICK HERE oddly enough thats a thread i started in October 2009 about the very same topic due to the very same reason your asking now.

Ok, Im getting really frustrated here.

I updated to 2.1. It STILL does not let me set up this account with IMAP, and when I try to do it as a gmail account it also does not work. Does anyone have any other ideas!?

P.S, if i go to Gmail.com, rather than mail.conncoll.edu, I CAN NOT sign in with my username and password.

When you login to your .edu account you said its hosted by gmail. go into settings and make sure imap is enabled, see if pop3 is enabled.

Just to be clear ..... You watched THIS VIDEO and it still doesn't work?

When you say "I try to do it as a gmail account it also does not work." .... Can you provide me any more details? Do you get an error? Does it let you set it up it just doesn't work (no errors)?

If you don't mind, tell me exactly what your doing and seeing step by step and I'll do my best to walk through this with you.

Also, lets keep THIS ARTICLE in our back pockets as a last resort but I'll keep my eye on this thread waiting for your reply.

Ok, first the gmail way, this is what im doing

Click Gmail app, Click "add account", Select "google" (only option), "adding an account, you can use more than one blah blah blah" click next, sign in, type in my username: jsmith@conncoll.edu (i also tried john.smith@conncoll.edu) and password, sign in, "you phone is communicating with google servers...",

Then i get the message "Sorry... Your username and password do not match, please try again.

Then the IMAP way,

Go into mail, menu, new account, "other" (pop3/imap), manual set up, protocol: IMAP, email: jsmith@conncoll.edu (have tried john.smith), username: jsmith (have tried john.smith, jsmith@conncoll.edu, and john.smith@conncoll.edu), password, IMAP server: imap.gmail.com, SSL security port 993, "next"

"Warning Authentication failed. Please verify your username/password"

i am POSITIVE i am typing in my username and password correctly....

I'm going to PM you my personal email address. Let's take this convo out of this forum. If we get it working you can always pop back in and update just in case someone else out there is having a similar problem.
