Color change keyboard suggestions?

I'm looking at getting the LG V60, which would be my first non-LCD phone. Up until now I've been using Swype as my keyboard, but keyboard burn in is one of the common burn in culprits on OLED screens. I've looked into a few that color shift during use, but nothing seems to work quite right so far. I.e. Atrocious swipe style typing or massive ad issues. So I'm looking for as close to the original Swype keyboard as possible (especially if I can swipe up to capitalize a letter), but with some color shifting during use.

I know Swift Key is popular, but it didn't do automatic color shifting the last time I used it. It also didn't seem to be as accurate when swiping.

Honestly I can't say that I've heard of any keyboard that does this, so I would imagine with such a niche feature something riddled with ads is probably as close as you're going to get. However I feel that you may be selling the technology short these days. I haven't seen many mentions of screen burn in a long while. Also if you used a dark theme with OLED the pixels are turned off, so really it would be the letters, if anything, that burned in I would think. If this overly concerning, you could switch back and forth between light and dark theme which I know Swype has along with several other really nice themes for variety.

As I cannot put your concerns to rest it might be helpful to see what other OLED phone users are using and see if they've had any issues with burn in or if they have better tips. Maybe in the LG V40 or V50 forums. I have the S10+ which is OLED and have used dark mode Gboard pretty much the whole time without any signs of burn in but it's not an LG.

It worked ok for the bit I tried it, but it's stupid expensive at $12 for a lifetime premium subscription.

As for the burn in issue, I know everyone says things are better now. Then I look at my wife's use on her phones (all Samsung Notes or once an S7), and she always gets burn in despite having auto brightness and short screen time out. So it's still very much a concern from my personal experience. Plus Swype is dead (I've been running an extracted APK backup ever since) and I think those color shift keyboards just look cool.

Yeah that's a lot. Then the first negative comment I read, I only read the negative ones, was that after paying they're still getting ads. I've given up several apps for exactly that reason. I mean that's what I'm paying for, IMO. I say it's a lot but on the other hand if this is something that gives you peace and you like it, what's the value of that? I'd double check that ad thing first tho. Just me.

Yeah and I knew swype was dead... Not sure where my head was on that one. Well actually it's swiftkey now. I don't know if they kept the theming like swype had or not. I never liked swiftkey before the buyout and haven't tried it since. Lol

I'm trying Swiftkey again. I do like the neon themes, but I still miss the accuracy and functionality of Swype. Muscle memory can be a pain. Lol. I didn't know they were bought out, though.

Well, Gboard and SwiftKey cause burn-in. On Gboard the G logo burns in if you have dark mode on, and on SwiftKey everything burns in plus in some cases blue-based custom backgrounds (hence burnt-in hexagons around my keyboard from the previous background I had). My phone is less than a year old and the screen is covered with keyboard and whatsapp burn-in and almost the whole thing is pinkish. Sadly this is unavoidable on OLED and replacing the screen is usually not worth it if you have a less expensive device as OLED screens are super expensive (I am not paying $189 plus labor for fixing burn-in on a $300 Galaxy S8).

I think you're right about Swype being more accurate or maybe it just guessed better. Either way muscle memory is one reason I like to swipe to type. I can usually get the word or close to it without looking, well until it doesn't even want to give me anything close to the word I'm trying to swipe. Some times I'll just touch a letter by mistake and it'll give me a whole word, not sure what that's about.

For some reason, probably because of all the mention at the time how similar Swype and SwiftKey were, I thought SwiftKey had bought them out. Nuance that bought them I think just wanted Dragon, the dictation tool that came out not long before the end. They have a lot of business and productivity type apps on the Play Store and one article said they wanted Dragon for use in the medical field. It looks like not long after this however Microsoft bought out SwiftKey. $250M... can you imagine?


milleniumdroid, wow, I guess I've just gotten lucky because this is at least my second if not third AMOLED screen and I've never gotten burn in. My biggest screen issue is rubbing all of the Oleophobic coating off the lower part of the screen, and I thought that was from heavy use. I can't imagine how much you must be on WhatsApp to have a singular app burnt into the screen. The keyboard I can imagine, almost every app has something you need to type at some point. Add all of that up and I easily see the Keyboard as one of, if not THE, most used apps.

I thought Microsoft bought Swype, then promptly killed it for whatever reason. Not that it matters at this point. XD
