I have read a few post trashing Comcast for the 250GB per month data cap. I just wanted to clear up a few things about it.
It was always there. Comcast just did not tell anyone. If you hit the cap, they would call you and send an email warning you about too much data usage and warn you they may shut off your service for abusing the network. So if you never got one of those calls, you never went over the 250GB cap.
250GB of data, is a heck of a lot of data. This is Gigabytes, not Gigabits. Your download speeds are measured in bits. It takes 8 bits to make one byte. So if your download speeds say 8mb (megabits) you are actually downloading at 1MB (Megabyte). Lowercase is bits, caps is bytes. You have to factor that in. I have seen many post that people just don't under stand this. They say I have a 20mb speed so I will hit the 250gb cap fast. Not understanding it will take 8 times that amount of data to actually reach the cap.
From what I can see, the way Comcast is measuring the data usage seems wrong. Their tool online that shows you how much data you used, is always much lower then I expect it to be. Which is good. But at the same time, the most I ever used according to that tool was 100GB. I average 45GB a month with 3 computers and two game systems.
With all ISP's, 5% of their customers use 80% of the network. The data caps were put into place so the other 95% of the customers are not stuck using just 20% of the network. If I ran an ISP, I would have no problem booting 5% of my customers off so the other 95% can be happy.
