Coming from an iPhone 6+

My family is all Mac like you (2 Macbook Pros, iPads, wife has iPhone 6) and I sold my 6+ for a nexus 6. My transition has been seamless. You sound like you're talking yourself into keeping an iPhone, but I had no trouble switching and much prefer android. My Mac handles everything else.

Can you ellaborate? What kinds of things did you have to change and what were the easier parts vs the harder ones to switch. Moto has the 64gb available so I was thinking of just biting the bullet and if I hate it selling it on CL or something. I just dont know specifics and wont until I get it in hand. I also dont want to make my wife's ability to get in touch with me any more difficult or make the process of sharing videos too much more difficult. I am okay with another step or two but like 5 steps and it becomes frustrating #firstworldproblems

I have an iphone 6 and nexus 6 and imho you may be best served staying with the Iphone. To me the iphone camera is a bit better and the audio quality with headphones seems to be quite a bit better. I have yet to own an android device that seems to put as much effort into the audio circuits as apple does, perhaps this is because this all started with the ipod. I love the Nexus but if you are heavily into the Apple ecosphere it just does not make that much sense to me to switch. The iphone 6 and 6 plus are very nice devices and I for one cannot decide which I like better between the Nexus the iphone 6 series.

Yeah I scored a 64 but I canceled the order for now. I agree with all of the above comments and think for now I will stay with iOS. That being said I'll probably change my mind again in a day or two and order another one. I'm not sure what to do. iOS is probably best for my family and I though so I should probably stick with that.

There's no question you'll be happy going with a 6 or 6+. Both are excellent phones that generally maintain and enhance the user experience to which you and your family have brown accustomed, and would require no migration or acclimatization. I suspect that if you do end up choosing to make that switch, though, you will find a number of things that you absolutely love about Android and a number you miss from iPhone, with the key being which draws you in more.

One thing in which you can rest assured with the Nexus line is that it is the closest in terms of purity of Android. Much like iPhones, you will have long-term updates made available quickly and straight from the source, and the Nexus is less likely to suffer from conflict with 3rd party bloatware than Android phones that are skinned.

I recommend you not switch but just ADD an android device when you can. Have both. Use both. Enjoy both. If you later decide 2 phones is too many than sell the one you like least. A sim adapter is all you should need if you don't want to add an additional line.

Exactly what I do. I had a Nexus 5 to go along with my iPhone and am searching for my next Android device. Tried the Moto X 2014 but battery life and camera killed it. Now I'm considering the Nexus 6 but I'm not sure I want to drop this amount of cash on an extra device. Have an iPhone 6 Plus now and am always on the Android hunt. Also considering the note 4 and some of these newer phones coming out soon.

Might I suggest a Note 3? Still a great phone but notably cheaper (even at the gouger AT&T) now that the 4 is out.

I boost my overall volume output a bit in my music app's equalizer and use ear buds that have some noise isolation. No complaints about sound quality/volume from the head phone jack.

I would say try the phone for two weeks or whatever the return window is and see if it works for you. Theorizing only helps to a point.

You know that saying, if you want something don't right do it yourself? I think the OP should go find out first had how the Nexus 6 works for himself first had. I have never own an iPhone and I don't have anything against it. I just prefer android and the Nexus 6 is a good device..

I ordered another one, this time from motorola. Would have been better off not canceling but whatever. Says it'll deliver on the 3rd but maybe sooner if the shipping gods have mercy on me. Usually I get stuff pretty quick once it ships.

What did you order? Color size?
I ordered one today but they only have blue 32gb which is fine for me. I don't need 64 but I wanted white. I just couldn't wait as I'm replacing a device and need on asap.

So far the cons outweigh the pros for me but I am stubborn lol. It isn't a problem to download 3rd party but teaching my wife to use it when she wants to send me stuff or vice versa will be the con with that one. I just wish there was a smoother transition for messaging and I would be all about it. My biggest deal is the whole texting vs. iMessage thing. I understand that WhatsApp or BBM or Hangouts would work, but I was hoping to avoid them. I am a stock guy at heart so I like to use the intended apps for things like messaging, phone calls, and such.

If your concern is sending and receving images and videos just log into each others photos backup and you can see whatever photos and videos you want.

As far as being a stock guy, hangouts is stock...

I ordered a 64gb Blue, didn't really care about color because the front is black but needed 64 for sure. I know hangouts is stock, and it will likely work but I just want it to be easy to see photos and videos. My wife has zero service at work (shes a teacher) but has Wifi and usually texts me during her lunch and planning periods. Her sister has the Note 3 and can't send or receive messages with her at all so that is my dilemma. I may end up selling or returning it if I cannot get it to work, but we will see. If I sell it will likely be for what I paid for it so it will go fast. No need for me to make money on it really.

If you look at the specs, the nexus has the better camera. 8 mp, to 16 mp. Nexus wins that match... Don't use the headphones that come with the iPhone because apple did something tricky by adding special pins that will mess with your headphone jack...

Interesting. Can you post some links to your references to this?

The last time I looked at the earphones (the crappy earphones that is) that come wirh contemporary iPhones it looked like a standard 3.5mm job. Are you saying they'll somehow damage your non-iPhone headphone jacks?

I've used Apple headphones on every device conceivable and never noticed a difference. I don't think that's true...not saying anyone is a liar but I just don't believe that. Nexus has a 13.1mp camera btw not 16mp.

Hangouts is over wifi as well. I have a few iPhone friends and I just had them download hangouts and that's how I message them. None of them complained about it being too difficult. This part at least shouldn't be a large problem for you. I would also suggest her sister download hangouts and then she could message with her as well. Not everyone on android knows hangouts exists. I just introduce it to people I'm going to be chatting with a lot because I don't like sms texting. Good luck.

Oh and pictures work fine with it. Never have a problem sending or receiving. Never tried a video.

Okay so I got the phone and out of the box it was awesome. Not too much bigger than my 6+ so that was a plus (pun intended) and the screen on it is very nice. The iPhone's screen was my favorite I had ever used and still may be but so far the screen is awesome. The speakers rock and the headphone volume I have found is close to my iPhone, enough so that I do not notice. The battery probably won't compare, I was getting about 2 days on my 6+, but as long as it lasts a day I am good. Not sure about a case, but ordered a dbrand skin for it just for scratches. I am using my Pebble as my "trusted device" so that solves the security skipping I liked with the Touch ID sensor in the iPhone. I started using Hangouts and my sister-in-law uses it and now my wife does so I think I solved the whole iMessage problem detailed before. I also have Google Talk at work on my compute which makes it super easy for me to contact her. She'll warm up to it. Sending videos on there still isn't as good as iMessage but oh well, you win some and you lose some. The camera so far is adequate, though I haven't had much reason to use it yet. That's my synopsis for now. Any recommendations for useful apps and widgets and such would be amazing.

Definitely let me know how it goes. I have the exact same issues as you. My wife and I currently use iPhones and I love Android but miss the following when switching to android (have had a N5, Moto X 2014):

1. iMessage - I've always had issues with turning off iMessage and getting messages to come through after I switch to android. My wife (and anyone else who has an iPhone would send me texts and I would never get them. My temporary solution is to turn off iMessage and never use it so when I switch back and forth it just stays on SMS.

2. Sending videos and pictures. When sending from iPhone to iPhone it's seamless. They are compressed automatically and still look great. Android struggles with this and I have trouble sending videos at all on Android. They are usually too big to message or even email using hangouts or the messaging app. I have yet to find a good solution.

3. The battery - I hated that on android I'd have to always turn stuff off and cripple the phone just to get close to what I could get on an iPhone while leaving everything on.

4. The camera - I have a 2 year old and the iPhone 6 Plus captures him nicely even though he's running around like crazy. My n5 couldn't really get many great shots because the shutter is so slow.

Again, let me know how it goes! I'm curious how you like it.
