Comparison: Those who have used both a Samsung fingerprint sensor and Apple Touch ID.

S6 is close but touch id on iPhone still better. But for regular use both are great, hopefully the software is more refined in Note 5 and the scanner is more accurate than S6. If you are coming from Note 4 then this will be great leap since the Note 4 and previous gen swipe fingerprints were garbage.

Fingerprint scanner is only as good as how you program it to read your selected finger/s.

You have to make sure you scan ever inch of your thumb, at every scan move it a few mm to the left and then right. Mine works flawlessly unless I've got a sweaty thumb from the gym and then I just have to wipe the sensor.

If you make a lazy attempt during the programming part then its not going to work and you have yourself to blame.

+1 on this. I think people get so wound up on this that they forget the iPhone's and galaxy's are simply exactly the same. I see it all the time with friends and family members. On the iPhone you have to register the while index of your finger on former phones like the s6 although the scanner is in the home button you truly don't have user your hold index. You can just keep picking your finger up and place it back down until complete. Sometimes we have to realize that everything that happens isn't a direct affect on the manufacturer itself but a user error on our part.

Yes and no. There is no question that some previous scanning devices were absolute garbage not fit for inclusion onto a high-end phone. Apple and Samsung both have their strengths and weaknesses- but Apple got it right the first time with Touch ID.

Sorry should have mentioned that i was just talking about the S6, never had the S5 but from hearing about it, it wasnt the best fingerprint scanner to be created.

Samsung took a couple of goes but its now perfect if you spend the time programming it correctly.

The note 5 performs similarly to the S6 in my time with it, and i did a comparison with the iphone 5S back when the S6 first launched. They are very similar in performance, but i will give the edge to the iphone 5s for being more consistent, and generally better at recognising my finger at different angles.

It might be down to the way the button was designed though. Samsung's button is slightly raised, and a rounded rectangular shape, which means sometimes you can press the home button without the finger resting over the home button entirely. But for apple, the home button is sunken in a little and round. So whenever you are pressing the button, your finger is most likely covering the entire sensor.

Just came from a 6+ to an s6 and I'd say the s6 is great but not on par with touch id. So far I only unlock my phone and there is no option in Google play or a pay app so the functionality is a lot less. Still fantastic though!

Does anyone know if you can set the finger print to delay like you can for other unlock methods? For example, only be required after a 15 minute delay? Also, if you have either trusted bluetooth devices or trusted locations set does that bypass the requirement for the finger print?

Why'd you switch if you don't mind me asking? Happy with the choice?

Oh it was nothing with the iphone; it was a gorgeous device and performed exceptionally. I just wanted something new. I thought I'd give Samsung another chance and this phone tugged at my heartstrings as I loved the 4s :p so far happy with the phone; not happy with dealing with carrier bull. I'm hoping for a root to come out so I can install a custom rom; my model wasn't supported via ping pong

I have used the fingerprint scanner on the 4 since I got my phone in December, and never have a problem using it. I scanned my index finger and thumb in different positions even at a one handed angle and it works every time.

They work about the same for me. Both have around the same failure rate I would guess (I am comparing my iPad Air 2 to my S6 which I probably use about the same amount of time) I would say the rounder shape of the iPad's home button is probably better as a scanner and my finger naturally falls in the middle but I find the S6 works well on my side of my thumbs better which is what I use when I am trying to unlock things one handed like. But overall I think they perform similarly I think the S6 though is a bit slower at unlocking but not a big deal. I am curious to see what Android M brings to the table as I had some weird quirkiness with the Smart Lock feature in Lollipop but I just leave that off now.

What can the scanner be used for on the Samsung devices, besides unlocking the phone?

I have both the s6, note 5 and the iPhone 6 and plus. The s6 fingerprint was not as fast as the iPhone 6. But i have to say the note 5 is Slightly faster than the iPhone's fingerprint scanner

I feel like the fingerprint sensor in the Note 5 is much more accurate than the fingerprint scanner in the S6. The fingerprint sensor recognizes my fingerprints every time I use it on the Note 5. I haven't had any problems with them not being read. On the S6, I always had to put my finger on the sensor at least twice before it would unlock. It was a minor inconvenience, but it was still annoying.

Yes you can. You can also set trusted places, like your home (I have my home and my mom's as trusted places) and it won't fingerprint lock and trusted devices like Bluetooth or a watch, etc. Yiu can set a trusted voice so you can use "OK Google" and you can set it to not lock whole carrying it on your body.

I can finally do my own comparison :)

The sensor is amazing. Both the quickness and accuracy are beyond what I was expecting. Very pleased.

It's pretty darn close, but it is definitely better than the swipe scanner on my Tab S.
