I just noticed that the compass is missing from my map screen. For years I have been seeing the compass. I don't know when it disappeared, maybe with the installation of Android 10. How do I fix it. Thanks.

Try uninstalling the update then updating again see if comes back

If you rotate the map (with two fingers), the compass will reappear. If you revert to North facing up, then it'll disappear again.

Thanks. I've never used North facing up. I rotated the map and still no compass. When I left the beta, still no compass. I must have missed a setting somewhere. What else can I try? Please remember, the compass was there for about 5 years until it quit recently.

Is this only when you're navigating, or even when the map is just static?

That's a good question. I think I remember that's is missing when I'm traveling but I haven't tried it since I received the suggestions to fix it. I won't be traveling until the end of the week. I'll try it then and get back to you with the results. Thanks again for offering me something else to try.

Just tried the app while on the road. Still couldn't get a compass on the screen. I can understand why there wouldn't be a compass on the screen when you're in NORTH ONLY, but no matter what I tried, still no compass. It used to work before the Android 10 update. Somehow I feel that I missed a setting. Any other suggestions?

Ok, but is this only while navigating while driving? The default for me is the 3D view when moving. I haven't tried switching from that recently.

I have version 10.27.02. I can't find a 3D version. What am I missing. I searched for it on the web and found a link to 3D version but it just opened the Maps version I stated above. I need more guidance. As usual, I thank you for all the help.

10.27. 2

Actually, I might have misspoken -- the 3D perspective view is when I'm using the Android Auto interface on my wife's car display. Now that I think about it, the Maps display on the phone while navigating is probably still 2D top-down. Unfortunately, I'm unable to test that out right now, so I'd have to get back to you about it.

I'm on 10.28.1, but I don't think that makes a big difference. I just tested it while navigating -- it does switch to a slight 3D perspective view (which you can temporarily change to 2D top-down by using two fingers to drag up and down). Since it's 3D perspective, up is always the direction you're facing. And you're right, there is no compass in this view.
